Hey guys I received an email couple of weeks ago saying that they won't able to give me financial aid. I declined the admission offer, but I am sure that Michigan is a great school, they have been so kind that it has been very sad to decline the offer for financial constrains.

I really don't understand how some schools make their financial aid decisions. Their doesn't seem to be any logic behind it. Some lower ranked schools didn't offer any financial aid and some offered very generous aid to entice me to go there. Some of the very highly ranked schools offered significant aid and some none.
In general I thought I would be a "desirable" candidate for most schools yet I can't see any logic to the financial aid decisions. Some schools have a policy of no aid to foreign LLM students except for maybe 1 or 2 very select scholarships in certain areas for example.

I am sorry to hear, mate! I'm still waiting for a decision.. Not unlike you, if I receive no aid whatsoever, I will also have to decline the offer.
I was accepted to Cambridge and even though UK's currency is pounds, Cambridge's overall cost is still way less than Michigan.

I also declined Michigan's Offer. It was very hard because I think that Michigan probably has one of the best academic reputations and Dora-maria give us special atention. The program is small, the University is beautiful and people are friendly. I was also being considered for the scholarship, so you might have one extra chance there.
My decision was made based on professional perspectives, since I want to work with things related to the Government and some working experience abroad, Georgetown was a better fit for me right now. However, I still consider Michigan for a future S.J.D or Visiting Scholar experience. All students that I talked to were unanimous in saying that Michigan was the best experience of their lives.

Well the scholarships logic is different depending of the rank of the Universities. For the top ranked Universities, scholarships are base on need, because it supposed that all admitted students are very very good, for instance the case of Harvard. Other Universities have merit scholarship to attract very talent candidates that usually are admitted to other well ranked universities, that is the case of Michigan or Cornell. However at this point the resources can make a great difference, even though there are very good candidates they can not offer a scholarship to everybody, so they play the game to attract students while students decide which university gives the best offer.

Has anyone heard from Michigan regarding any financial aid? I sent an email to them three days ago but hear nothing yet...
Posted Apr 11, 2015 19:30
Fellowship offers were already made to the selected candidates.. Those who are waiting will only be offered financial aid if the previously selected candidates decline their offers..
That's why it's probably taking so long. I just hope we hear from until the 15th..

I was in the same position as you...On 3 April, I was offered the Grotius Fellowship by Michigan and declined it since I accepted the offer from Cambridge already by then...
Even taking the fellowship into account, the expense at Michigan would not be less than Cambridge. Besides, I would like to pursue international law, so I suppose that Cambridge is a better choice.
I just hope that I didn't make a wrong decision.
