Michigan admissions

L&E-pil

I have to agree with L&E-pil; just received the package and I am impressed. I used to put Berkeley (still waiting a decision) over Michigan but now I am having second thoughts. I am still waiting to hear from Harvard, Berkeley and Columbia but Michigan's offer is very tempting!

I also used to put Berkeley over Michigan due to the reputation that the former has, but after receiving this package, which allowed me to understand the philosophy of Michigan Law School and the attention that the LL.M. students receive as constituents of a unique academic community, if I were to choose between the two of them I would definitely go for Michigan.

Hey everyone.
Thanks for sharing all the info Wolverine - very good marketing skills ;)
I just got my addmission letter on Thursday and have to say that am truly impressed. Hope that the scholarship info will come soon - does anyone have any know-how in this respect? Furthermore, Wolverine (by any chance) would you have any info re: international student trying to get a US student loan?
Thanks in advance and congrats to all admitted!

Phew!

I see people are in the same shoes as I was last year...
Well, it is rather difficult indeed.

International students can borrow from American banks if they have a US co-signer (for example your uncle living here for X years :) ) or if they have a US credit history (for example they worked in the US before, hence have a social security number and have a credit card -- in a nutshell).

Some schools provide loans directly to their students (Yale, Harvard), others made arrangements with CitiBank and SallieMae to PROVIDE LOANS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WITHOUT US CO-SIGNERS! (NYU, Columbia).

Michigan did not have such an arrangement last year...but you can contact the admissions office...

To get a picture of how student loans in the US work, study the following link:

Thanks Wolverine - have heard about it and looks like local (ie. non-us) financing will have to be the answer for me in case the scholarship expectations fail.
Do you know when do they send these out (and in which form)? I am wondering about the form since some of you were writing about an email that informed you about admission before you got the package. Well, I didnt get any email beforehand...but then, since my spam filter is quite harsh, the email might have been deleted before it ever made it to my inbox. Which is a situation I dont want to repeat with scholarship results. ;)

Hey,

They usually send an e-mail and a regular mail (fed-ex). I do not know if their policy has changed this year...

HOWEVER, I cannot emphasize enough that -in my view- its really good to contact the schools personally (better CALL) and ask your questions (any...decisons, student life, financing...blah-blah).

This indicates a stronger level of interest from the side of the candidate.

I DO NOT say that you should call or e-mail, with EVERY single questions that pop up in your mind, nor do I say you should talk to them every week :)

Hi guys,

would you choose Michigan over Harvard?

Michigan is said to have an excellent small program and seems to give a lot of attention to LLM students.

"Harvard" has probably a better sound, but I am not sure about the actual quality of its LLM program/its attitude to LLM students.

Any thoughts?

No doubt that Harvard is Harvard. In my view, if you get accepted, just go to Harvard. However, without Harvard as an option, Michigan seems to be very interesting because of (i) quality, (ii) small LLM class (40 something this year), (iii) job fair with other top 5 law schools (Yale, Harvard, etc).

Guys, I've received admission from Umich. Unless I get an admission from Berkeley, I will go to the University of Michigan... Any thoughts from your side on this choice? Advises? Better Boalt Hall or UMich? Thanks for your answers!
Best.
G.
P.S. Any Italian who has already decided to go to UMich?

Hey G,

I'm in the same situation. I've been admitted to UMich and UPenn, but still waiting Berkeley and Harvard. I believe that Berkeley has a stronger name, but on the other hand UMich has a very selective and small LLM program. Apart from this and, of course, weather considerations, it is really difficult to decide. But I have not received yet the offer letter and the package from Michigan that people said here would make me want to choose for Michigan...

To ipsefixit: I think you should send an email asking whether there any Italians, apart from you, who were admitted, for according to what I've heard it's a rather common practice however, regarding your Italian pizza offer, "deal"! :)
Is any one here who was admitted to International Tax LL.M. at Michigan?
Does anyone have any thoughts about upcoming daunting housing arrangements? Any info about "Lawyers' Club" will be much appreciated :)

I sent an email to Michigan today asking for a status update - here is the email I received -

Dear Mr. [],

I'm sorry, your letter just went out today or yesterday.
Since I understand that you need to know decisions as soon as possible, please allow me to inform you by email today that the Law School is unfortunately not able to offer you a space for the 2008-09 LLM class. We appreciate your interest in our program and wish you all the best for your alternative plans.

Thus, it would appear that I am not going to Michigan, but more importantly (to everyone else), it would appear that (1) you can get a decision via email, and (2) more decisions are imminent.

Good Luck everyone!

Umich's program is not that big, so it is usual that only 2-3 enrolled students come from a single country.

@ espinoso Don't worry, they still seem to have space. I just got an admission. But I'll probably go to CLS, so I won't occupate any seat at UMich. Best wishes to you!

It's probably time to revive this forum:

I am happy to report that I just received an offer from U of Michigan for their LL.M. class of 2009/2010 (General LL.M.). Looks like they are making decisions very early this year - the last email I received from them said to wait for decisions in March or April.
