LLM with a kid

Jakob

Hello everybody!

I've been a frequent visitor to this thread for a couple of years now but I haven't come a cross to a situation where somebody would like to do a LLM degree but is at the same time married and has a small child.

I myself am going to graduate shortly from a European university with a law degree equivalent to a Master's. I've been working with a multinational company for a while now and I am contemplating in doing a LLM degree in the US since the company has a strong US presence and it has been my dream for several years now. However, I've been married a couple of years now and we have a 1-year-old daughter with my wife (by the way, I'm 25 years old).

Is there somebody out there who has been in the same situation? Or do you guys know any good universities that offer housing for small families, child care etc.? My main interests would be international trade law and international business law (well, international law in general). I know this is a long shot but you never know...thanks already!

Hi Jakob,

I'm in the same situation.

I will do my LLM next year at Boalt with a little child and my partner. The only "problem": the LLM program will start on August 10 while the birth of the child is expected on August 27...

UC Berkeley offers specific housing for students with family. It should probably be the same in other universities. I haven't looked at this when submitting my applications for admission.

I will normally suscribe ad hoc child care insurances in Europe.

Best regards,

R.

Hi guys..

my boy will be about 9 months when i start my LLM at Harvard this fall, and the plan is to have my partner and him join me, though it will mean taking out an extra 25k in loans

It also makes looking for housing abit more complicated, but these are very pleasant "complications"

cheers,
BK

Hi,
My problem with the kid was even worse as both me and my husband were doing our LL.M.s at Harvard this year and our daughter was only 2 when we were starting. We survived :) although with our spring exams ahead, I would refrain from declaring the ultimate success for a couple of weeks more. I would defnitely suggest taking a babysitter instead of daycare, since kids tend to get infected a lot in kindergartens and then all the family is ill. Also, affiliated housing provided by the university might turn out to be good and comfortable option.
Best luck!
