LLM at NYU or LLM at Harvard?

emz

Hi all,

I'm wondering if I should apply for the NYU LLM program; if I do, I'll be getting an LLB and LLM in four years' time.

However, I've always wanted to go to Harvard to do an LLM. The problem is, I will have to wait a few years later before I will go there.

I am tempted to try for the NYU LLM program and then go for a Harvard one later.

Does anyone have any advice and what are the differences between Harvard and NYU?

Thanks in advance!

Note what Harvard says in the application materials:

"Harvard Law School is rarely able to accept into its LL.M. Program anyone who already holds or is pursuing an LL.M. or equivalent degree from another law school in the United States."

You will never know what chances you have if you do not apply. Harvard takes also people who are straight after the law school, so why not give it a shot and send the application now?

what are your fields of interests? that may help in clarifying things. Harvard takes a good number of people straight out of law school but also a lot of people with considerable experience. In any case, why not just try for both?

Hi all,

Thank you for your help.

My interest is in international law at the moment. However, I am currently only in my second year of study.

Perhaps I should elaborate to clarify matters. There is a special programme that has just been started between NYU and my school which allows us to take 3 years to finish the LLB and then study one year in NYU. This means that by the fourth year, I will be graduating with a LLB and LLM.

I have been told that in terms of the quality of education, there isn't any difference between NYU and Harvard. I was also advise that the institutional culture is more important. Thus, I am trying to find out what the methodology of each school and the people there are like.

In addition, I have been told that taking the LLM program at NYU is a sure-win situation, however, I fear that I would be too hasty in making a decision now and end up studying somewhere that I wouldn't really want to; after all, studying in Harvard has been a lifetime dream for me.
