Job Placement for Domestic Tax LLM at NYU

X-men

This question is for the current students/alumni at NYU Tax LLM (domestic) program. How are the job placement like? I will be doing the tax LLM at NYU right after my JD, which I did after my B.A., so I will have no tax-related work experience. Would that be a big obstacle in getting interviews or finding jobs in big law firms? Would taking the NY bar b/f obtaining an LLM be a big plus? How helpful is the career service at NYU? When should I start the job search process? Any other advices will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm doing pretty much the same thing, but I worked a couple years before my JD. The people I've talked to (alums and career services at NYU) say it's really based on 1st semester LLM grades, then JD grades (and school). I also got a breakdown of people form last year who let career service know what they were doing, which is about 2/3rds of the class (the other third may have already had work coming in or just didn't want to bother with career services).
Of the 76 people, 53 were in law firms, 16 in accounting firms, 4 working for the government (probably IRS), and 3 were clerking for judges.
I'll let you know if I hear anything else.

Thanks! I've also been asking several current NYU LLM students about this issue. Apparently, you need at least an A- average grade to get jobs in NYC whereas out-of-state lawfirms don't really care as much about grades from the LLM program. In any case, getting an A at NYU is quite difficult, considering you will be in a class w/ attorneys, who've been practicing tax for several years.
