How much does prestige of program matter for aspiring academicians?

I would like to hear opinions on the following question:

If one is doing a research-stream LLM in order to pursue an academic career in law, how much does prestige of LLM program matter? For example, if one is choosing between a UofT or McGill offer with less attractive supervision options and a so-called "second tier" school with more attractive supervision options, how detrimental would it be in terms of tenure-track job prospects (in either US or Canada) to go with the latter?

For academic positions, prestige is important. Arguably more important, however, is the rigor of the program. Many LLM programs are not very academically rigorous, certainly not like their MA or other counterparts. i would advise strongly that you consider the relative prestige factor, but also whether they have a thesis requirement, opportunities to publish and do internships, the expertise of faculty whose interests correspond to yours, etc.

Hi,

How much credibility will a Vanderbilt LLM have in academia?
I hear the LLM is good, and intense, but not really heard of the University much......im from the UK.

Cheers

Hi!
Its very strange that universities such as Boston (21) and George Washington (20) though rank much below than Vanderbilt (15) are more well known. I guess one of the reasons could be that Vanderbilt is not located in one of the major happening cities of US like Washington, Chicago, Boston, NY or California.
I have done a lot of research on Vanderbilt as i have got a call from them.
Their LLM programme is very small as they have only 25 to 30 seats so one gets scrutinized very closely. On interaction with one of the JD students...i found out that the staff is very friendly and co-operative.
According to Princeton review, Vanderbilt is 7th or 8th in the quality of life.
Lets see, if Vanderbilt gives me good funding...i will be definitely going for it.
I am also waiting for the results of the other universities.
