What are the employment prospects at a top NY firm after doing an LLM program?

If you graduate from a top 5 school in the top 10 %, have similar experience from back home (say 2yrs + with a large firm doing corporate/int'l work), and offer a needed language, then I t hink you could get a job.

If you want to work one year in a NY law firm and then work for that firm's office in your home country then it will hard but not impossible. If you are looking for a 1yr internship only (usually Cleary, Simpson, Sullivan), then it is 95% about contacts. Your law firm in your home country or a big client should recommend you b/c you will be competing with people that has this type of recommendations. If you are looking for a permanent position in a NY law firm, that is very very very hard. It is true that it depends on your background, languages that you speak, etc. Right now, it is much easier to get a job if you are a Chinese lawyer than if you are a European or South American lawyer.

Thanks for your input guys. I gather that if one graduates from a top-5 LLM program (HLS, CLS, YLS, NYU, Stanford) with good grades, there is a good chance of securing employment with a top NY firm. By way of background, I am an English graduate (LLB, BCL) working at an offshore office
of an American firm ranked in the top-30 prestige rankings of Vault.com. My ultimate goal in pursuing an LLM would be to secure employment at a top-5 NY firm.

A number of other questions:

1) How does the recruitment process proceed typically? I understand that there are recruitment fares at the top law schools annually. When are these held? Should an LLM look there as a first stop or write in to the firms directly (since, as I understand, many firms are recruiting for summer associates at the fares - in which case is it possible at all to apply for and secure a summer associateship before I embark on my LLM)?

2) Would having the NY Bar qualification before graduation from the LLM program increase prospect of employment? In other words, upon graduation, the LLM can hit the ground running without having to review for the Bar.

(In any event, how does the typical Bar review process for fresh hires operate? Do they work and review for the Bar at the same time? Are the fees fully paid for by the firm, etc?)

Thanks for your thoughts guys. Any input as to what percentage of LLMs from the top-5 law schools who applied for positions were successful would also be appreciated. Thanks again..
