Deferring Admission

simone

Due to some fund constraints, I may need to save up for another year before I can join the program. I got through Stanford and UC Berkeley and I definitely want to go for at least one of them!

Can you give me your thoughts on the deferral process? What is the best way to approach them? Should I call up the admissions office (to test waters) before I write to them formally? And what is the best "reason" to give for deferral? And what are the chances? :( Should I block my seat (by paying the non refundable deposit) and then ask for deferral?

I have heard Stanford doesn't give too many deferrals but Berkeley might, right? Let me know how to go about this! Anything you might have to say will help!

Thanks

Hi Simone,

Probably the best is to call and inquire directly about the policy so you can make an informed choice. This would not only save you from deciding based on incorrect assumptions, but also from jeopardizing your chances in case you need to apply again in the future. Admissions officials have heard these questions a thousand times and they will not take offense from them.

I asked Stanford about deferring my admission to the SPILS and they said it was not possible. They also noted that I could apply again next year (obviously without guarantees!). I am not sure if they apply the same policy for all programs, so you would need to double check with them.

Good luck!
