Hi all,
It just struck me that applying for an LLM is very expensive.
For a UK graduate, the fees for sending an application through LSAC are around $300. That is crazy for one application
$85 application fee
$125 for International Transcript Authentication and Evaluation Service (ITAES)
$75 for DAS
$28 for law school report
Columbia website states: "We strongly prefer but do not require the International Transcript Authentication and Evaluation Service in addition to the basic CAS service; it is up to you whether you select the evaluation service."
Will my application be hindered if I decided not to use ITAES to save costs? Strong preference is worrying.

if you just apply for Columbia or Columia and universities that do not use LSAC, send them a nice letter in which you state this together with the application and it should be ok. I think the exeption has been made for such situations when people do not apply to multiple llm programs and it would not make sense to go trough lsac. For me personaly , I also went against a "strong recomendation to..:" and it was not a problem...

.
Welcome to the real world Einstein.
Let me be the last to say that using the ITAES is a wise choice simply because admissions staff hate evaluating a university on their own if they have a choice. Since you're not from Oxbridge not having ITAES will increase the element of human annoyance risk leading to a rejection.

I would have thought an LLB from UCL wouldn't have caused more difficulty than a degree from Oxbridge. Especially as UCL have a combined LLB/JD programmme with Columbia.
The cost of applying for an LLM in the UK/Europe is around £50. Columbia is $300. This isn't the "real world", but US law school expense which I hadn't appreciated.
Your genius comments are always appreciated. Thanks.

You're welcome. Perfect logic doesn't work in the real world. The T14 schools in the US do not perceive any university other than oxford/cantab. as equal or superior to them. If you are from the latter ITAES is unnecessary
I have no qualms accepting that the ITAES 'evaluation' is bollocks. But if admissions staff are used to bollocks from everyone, it's unwise to take a chance and not use ITAES. It's not as though you get an 'advantage'. For the $125 the risk of some staff getting exasperated on a friday evening is not worth it.
Applicants from the best universities have no cause to fear the ITAES and as such making a fuss over the ITAES fees (which is about 0.15% of the cost of the LLM) is foolish.

Ask application fee waiver from school. Emory and GW waived application fees.

They do give application fee waivers! I hope you asked for one.
