Brazilian Applicants - 2010 - 2011

How was your average GPA and were you the top of your classes? I am still unsure about the equivalence of brazilian grades and US/UK. I got 8.5 GPA but was not one of the best from my class (actually I was in the middle of the rank). I did not apply to any US Universities, jut for Cambridge and LSE (was accepted at LSE and haven`t heard from Cambridge yet).
What about you?

In the UK system, if you get:

40-49% its a Third class degree (3)
50-59% Second class lower (2.2)
60-69% Second class upper (2.1)
More than 70% First class (1)

I dont know for sure, but I believe that the conversion from the UK classification to the US one is something like:
3.7-4.0 - 1st
3.3-3.69 - 2:1
2.7-3.29 - 2:2

I also read that a 75 in Brazil is the equivalent to 60% in the UK system

You should also consider Florida and Georgetown - maybe Michigan as well.

It will be my pleasure to answer any further questions you might have!

Hey Augusto - thanks a lot for ur help.

I rang UF yesterday and it looks like I can apply until June 1st, which is great. I just gotta run to get the reference letters and the transcripts from UWE.

You mentioned you were admitted to those 3 universities have you decided which one youre gonna choose?

So 8.5 out of 10 in Brazil will be equal to a first in UK, even if you are not between the top 5%-10% of your class?

I do not know how to explain that.. I have good grades from UFGRS, but still am not at the top... And I am curious to know how the universities will see my case.

Not really. I believe a first class in UK would be at least a 9 out of 10 in Brazil.
I'm in the third year of law school and have never seen anyone getting more than a 75 here... however, a 8.5 would def be a 2.1 and, as far as I know, that's enough to get into any Master in UK or Ireland.

Hey rafa7777, just for the sake of curiosity, why did you decide to go get an LLB in Ireland? Did you go to high school in Brazil or abroad?

Hey j.a.,

Long story short, I was about to start the last year of my law degree in Brazil when I got a chance to come to Ireland for six months. I was going back to Brazil when I got a very good temp job. After 5 months, once my employment contract was over, I was offered a permanent position within the Tax department, but I decided that Id only stay in case I could get a law degree here. As soon as the college accepted my application, I accepted the job offer, so here I am!

Cheers!

Hey Guys,

I have a few questions about how important grades are in the application process (especially in the US and UK). Although I did not get the "perfect" grades (80%), during my graduation period I've wrote a lot of articles (some of them published by important Institutions) and worked as a trainee in some world-known companies. I'm quite sure some of my teachers will not have problems about giving me some excelent letters of recomendation. That being say I ask you guys who were already admitted in NYU, LSE and so on: what are my chances?
Hope to hear from you guys soon.

Hi Brazilian Applicants,
I've just started filling in my applications for the LLM 2011/2012 and I would like to know if there is any special info I should know about CV. How much details about my work experience I should add in the CV? I have 10 years of experience in law firms (including internships). So, I'm not sure if its worth mentioning I was also an intern at Defensoria Publica (do you know how should I call it?).
Really appreciate any kind of help. tks!
