Hi Brazilians!!

I welcome all Brazilian LL.M. applicants

I believe it would be awesome to get in touch with each other and discuss all the relevant LLM information.

I have been admitted to NYU, LSE and CLS (waitlisted UOF - rejected - Berkeley and OX). I am from Rio with 3 years working experience in a top law firm. I graduated (UFRJ) and have a master degree. Toefl 112.

Would you mind sharing your credentials and where you have been admitted?

How about the next steps?

Valeu galera. Sou brasileiro e não desisto nunca!!!!

Hi there Coase!

I've been admitted to Chicago, NYU, LSE, QMUL and ILF. Still waiting to hear from HLS, CLS and YLS, though I presume I've been turned down by the latter since I got no news so far.

I'm a USP graduate, 4 years' practice, Toefl 115. Have recently lived a couple of years in Niteroi, by the way.

Cheers!

Great to hear from you.

You have a lot of options... I am undecided, but soon I'll post my decision.

What did you think about the application process.

BTW, Where are the brazilians??????

I graduated from UFRGS, have 6 years experience at the government, working with international law. I applied to LSE and Cambridge, got an offer from LSE and still waiting to hear from Cambridge (without much hope, however).

Fantastic...

I will probably go to CLS.

Congrats to all. The competition for brazilian applications is the most fierce of them all.

Hello everyone!

I just graduated from UERJ and have been working for the past 4 years on top tax law firms in Rio. I want to start my LLM next year in europe, since I have an european citizenship. So I'm taking care of the first details, like preparing the documents and selecting the universities I want to apply for. I'm thinking about studyin tax law in the netherlands. Any suggestions?

I also have some questions, for example:
(ii) should we send our original academic records (with our grades), or should we send an authentic copy (cópia autenticada)? The same to the refference letters from teachers.

Talk to you soon! Beijos.

Leti,

First in your preparation, you should research the universities you would like to apply to. Having some sort of counseling in this part of the process, for instance from a bi-national institution, might be of help. But, in general, consulting universities' websites would suffice.

Preparation of the application materials usually comprises (i) taking the Toelf/Ielts, (ii) obtaining copies of your academic credentials (transcripts, degree certificates and ranking statements, if applicable), (iii) getting your credentials officially translated, (iv) filling out the application form, (v) getting recommendation letters written, (vi) preparing your resume and (vii) writing your personal statement.

In general, universities will tell you should not receive any kind of external help while preparing your application. I won't advise otherwise.

As for the academic records, schools usually require they be sent in original versions. LSE is an exception, as it requires submission of originals only upon enrolment. Recommendations should always be sent in originals and specifically addressed to the university you are applying to. Letters beginning "to whom it may concern" are an easy way to get rejected.

You can PM me if you have any doubt.

Good luck in your next steps!

Hi.

I'm from São Paulo. Graduated in 2007 from PUC/SP and Im currently working in a big law firm in the city of Sao Paulo.

I have applied only to UK universities:

Oxford: rejected
Cambridge: still waiting
LSE: rejected
King's: accepted
UCL: accepted and that's where I'm going (except if for some reason Cambridge says yes)
Edinburgh: rejected
Nottingham: rejected
Aberdeen: accepted

I'm putting together a blog (http://greenandyellowsub.blogspot.com) where I'll try to post some tips about UK LLM applications and some other LLM-related issues (and maybe general stuff as well). I know I've had more rejections than acceptances, but I've learnt a lot throughout the process and my last three applications (LSE, UCL and KCL - which went through material changes from the first ones) had a great result (only arse kicked by LSE, so 2 out of 3 isn't bad).

The blog still needs a lot of work, but it already answers some of the questions I see here.

To all of you who are off to London later this year, hope to meet you all there.

Cheers,

Beicon

Fala galera!

I'm from Rio and will graduate from my law school in June. I've been accepted at NYU (Legal Theory Program) and just heard great news from Harvard.

I'm off to Massachusetts! Any other Brazilian heading to HLS?

Congratulations to us all!

Congrats on Harvard GSAR! I got through too!

Cyberlawyer is another Brazilian who got admitted. Do you know anyone else?

What area do you plan to concentrate on, if any? And where do you currently study? You'll barely have time to pack after graduation, uh? :)

Hey!

As j.a. has said, I'm also Brazilian and I have been admitted to HLS.
If everything goes well, I'll be there in August.
I've also been admitted to NYU, Columbia, Chicago, and Berkeley.

Glad to hear other Brazilians have been successful!
I wish you all the best of luck in your coming decisions and in your coming studies!

Hey GSAR!
Actually, I briefly met another Brazilian who was admitted to HLS. He is from RS and is a friend of a friend of mine =P and we both coincidentally went to commemorate at the same pizza parlor!

So, as far as I know, the Brazilians admitted to HLS are you, me, j.a. and this friend of a friend of mine.

That's some coincidence! I wonder only if we four are the only Brazilians admitted.

Historically, HLS has accepted around 04 candidates from Brazil, but last year 07 got in. So, let's wait and see if anyone else reveals him/herself.

Hey guys,

First of all Im glad to know that Brazilians are applying AND being accepted!

I work in Microsoft, in the Tax department, and have been talking to an attorney from US and hes encouraging me not only to do the NY Bar (which Ill be doing now in July), but also to enroll in an LL.M program. I am finishing my LL.B in Ireland in May and missed the application deadline, so I can only apply after September.

After all the research I believe the LL.M in Intl Taxation @ NYU might be the ideal for me, but I probably should apply to at least few other schools any idea which ones would have good Tax programs?

Also, if you guys have some spare time to talk about the application process, how was it? Did it take long? Did you need a high GPA?

Thanks a lot to you all and good luck!
Grande Abraço!

You should also consider Florida and Georgetown - maybe Michigan as well.

It will be my pleasure to answer any further questions you might have!
