I would say it depends on what you want to study.
Why does your boss prefer NYU particularly? If he has good reasons to believe NYU would suit your career path in a better way, I believe it's never wrong to listen to any valid point, your boss makes, I mean, he's the guy who's employing you.
Furthermore, only from ranking point of view, NYU is placed in a better position as it ranks 6th and Berkeley only ranks 9th tied with the University of Virginia (2012 U.S. News Ranking, Best Law Schools).
Therefore I would prefer NYU (and I mean NYC is NYC), so you can't go wrong there.
Only my 2 cents.

thank you for your suggestion.
My boss prefers nyu for no reason but he loves NYC. it is hard to believe that my boss, himself as a berkeley graduate, would suggest nyu. I am gradually convinced that nyu is the right place for me.

I agree it depends on your field of practice. Therefore, if you work within any technological environment, such as IP, regulatory law or even some areas of corporate law, I believe the best choice would be Berkeley.
Moreover, UC Berkeley has an overall better reputation. It has been recently ranked 4th among the Worlds Best Universities The Times Higher Education World University Ranking while New York University has been ranked only 51th.
Finally, you must also consider the experience of living in sunny California, just by the charming San Francisco Bay. It is always important to consider the weather on the place where youre gonna live for one long year!
Hope to have helped you! Good Luck on your decision!

@Riddle:
I don't agree with you riddle, quoting the overall Times HE Rankings is like comparing apples and oranges.
We are talking about law schools in this context, and the only consistent ranking in that field is the U.S. News ranking, in which NYU ranked always better than Berkeley. So what quality the other departments might have is of lesser importance as law school students will spend most of their time in law school I would assume.
And I don't agree with you on the corporate law subject, I think NYU outshines Berkeley in every aspect.
In what ways does it serve someone to be at Berkeley with a world-renowned engineering or mathematics departments while studying at the law school, it just isn't that relevant to them.
I agree with you that the weather is undoublty sunnier in California, but as I already said, New York is New York, from my point of view one the most exciting cities in the world. Living in New York is a one-of-a-kind experience in my opinion.

Thank yo so much for your suggestion and good luck to you!
Talking about the living environment, I am a bit worried about the nuclear pollution in california caused by the disaster happened in Japan. Latest news suggests that the nuclear pollution does make some negative influence on residents in California.

Where do you come from? How do you believe the nuclear radiation will reach to California? Any proof for that, oh my gosh! If you are a lawyer and speak of this before a jury!!!!

Some news reports have indeed affirmed that radiation reached the west coast of the US, but not to a point where it poises a threat to human life. Other sources say there is no measurable change. Who knows? But even the worst case scenario does not appear as a reason for concern.
Your boss is probably assuming that both schools are good, and favouring the life experience of the big Apple. Many people do! On the academic front, I agree they are different animals. Not in terms of quality because both are good, but of the areas of specialization. What's your interest?
By the way, if the boss is footing the bill, then go wherever he wants you to go! ;)

It makes total sense. Thank you for your advice.

I personally hate NYC since it really doesn't look like we see it in movies. If you want to live in a "slum" for a year with killer-cold-windy-dark weather and the depression it brings, go on :) Capitalism should not be the only motive while choosing the school to go. Berkeley is just as fine as fine as NYU in terms of quality of education (plus, happier professors:).
