HI, djvakil

Im from Mexico and i got the fulbright grant. I have been accepted to UPenn but Im still waiting for Yale, which is my first option.
In general, at least in my case, the fulbright grant makes a little easier the application procedure, since everything was handle by the agency (institute of international education), so I havent had any direct contact with the universities.
However, in spite of that so-called advantage, the fulbright commission in my country is always asking you to file papers, writing essays, sending documents and so on and most of the time on a very short notice, so if you have more occupations sometimes it gets a bit complicated to have everything ready on time.
But I think that having a fulbright grant really gives an advantage over other students in getting to the universities you want.

I hope that could help a little.
Congrats and good luck

Hi Ramsesgl,

The Fulbright system in Mexico seems to give you a better selection of Univs. In India the grant sends me straight to Case Western Reserve Univ. But your right the Fulbright brand name does help. BTW how much does your grant pay? Mine gives me a.)airfare b.) stipend c.) books n allowances d.) med insurance and ofcourse e.) tuition. They haven't quantified the amount for me yet. Best of luck with your other admissions!

Hi djvakil

I intend to apply for the fulbright scholarship in the future. Can you please tell me if you had any work experience when applying for the scholarship. I went thru the fulbright India website and they seem to want 2-3 years work ex. But I was wondering are they really strict about it? Your advice is highly appreciated.

Thanks

AJ

Hi Aj,

In your final interview which will be at the Fulbright House you will be dealing with 8 interviewers ( 4 Indians and 4 Americans). Each guy has their own set of priorities. After talking a few things over with them this is what I gathered.

If your interview is scored on 100 points this would be the break up.

40 Points Academic Record which would include:
a.) Your graduating score (top 2 -10% of your graduating class etc)
b.) Moot Courts (One international required)
c.) Papper Publications
d.) Membership in Student Bodies (ILSA...your college law review etc)

40 Points Work Experience.

Do note its very specific on the type of work experience. It has to be IPR or ADR specific. And yes they ask you alot of technical questions during the interview.

20 Points on MISC

This is the crucial part which distinguishes you from other candiates like

a.) Leadership Potential (lol, god only knows what that meant. and how they guage it in a 15 min interview!)
b.) TOEFL scores
c.) Extra Circ activities, NGO work etc etc

Best of luck with ur application! BTW...which College are u from AJ?

Hi Dj

Thanks for the info. Well, 40 points for work ex is way too much. Don't think I 'll stand much of a chance. I am still in law school. Anyway, thanks again. Oh yes! I am from School of Law, Indraprastha University, Delhi.

Cheers

Congrats all Fulbrighters out there:)

I am from Egypt, i got the Fulbright grant for the ac 2006-2007. The system here is that they finance ur leaving expenses and part of ur tuition fees.

As for the schools, u can either apply on ur own to meet deadlines(which is usually the case) or wait for their placements. They will only accept handling/following up on 3 applications and usually come up with a "safety net" school for u to apply to as ur fourth preference.

All the best to everybody.

Hi dj

I had to fill up the online form after the mexican fulbright comission told me that i had got the grant.
Its true that you have to repeat most of the information, but in my case, I was adviced by the commission to rewrite some essays, paying more attention to spelling and content, because the online form is the one send to universities. So, my suggestion for you is going over your first application and chech for any mistakes or inconsistencies you find.
As for the supplemental forms, they have to be ready before the fulbright commsions send the file to universities, which depends on the deadlines set for each country. In Mexico, I mail the documents by august of the last year, but the commsion sent the files to the universities 'till november i guess. In the meantime, the commission checks your file and sometimes ask for additional information.

Any other doubt, I ll be glad to help
