The Definitive 2011 Cambridge Thread

Exactly! It is completely disrespectful and is making me consider going to other universities..
I have contacted the BGS and all they tell me is that they proceed with the documents in the order they arrive.. They have my documents, but they have others documents they have to deal with before mine.. Apparently, it doesnt matter if Im coming from across the ocean, need a visa, a place to live, etc.. Lovely, right?

Just a brief calculation: if they process the docs in the order they arrive, and if you sent your docs in May and are waiting until today, and I sent my docs last week, I reckon that I will not be in Cambridge before November! Seriously, I think they will eventually hire some extra personnel and speed up the process by the end of August because they just can't afford losing half of their postgraduate students, especially the overseas students...

By the way, has anyone else noticed the huge amount of views this thread has got compared to threads about other universities?

I received my confirmation of admission today on Camsis! Within a week after I sent my documents. Unexpectedly fast I have to say.

What date exactly did u send ur documents? I mean, that's weird! People who sent theirs months behind haven't heard anything. I posted mine on 1st August and it was delivered on 3rd. What about u?

I sent them on 2 August. Since I sent them from The Netherlands by regular mail, my documentation should have arrived at the BoGS on 4 or 5 August. I received my confirmation on 10 August.

However, in my case the BoGS already was notified by the Faculty of Law that I fulfilled my academic condition. So they only had to process the certificate of my bachelor's degree, the IELTS test results and the Financial Undertaking Form. This was merely an administrative matter. I guess it takes longer if the LLM Admissions Committee/Degree Committee (of the infamous phrase 'Papers with the Degree Committee') has to decide on matters concerning the academic condition. That took two and a half months in my case...

Well in my case, I have no academic condition as my LLB result and everything is intact. All I had to send were the Undertaking(financial), original reference letters, and I did the language assessment which I passed long ago and I'v been notified of its waiver on my self-service page. But no colleged membership yet.

Do u know if I need to send a mail of inquiry whether it should be the Ms Wade or the BGS? If BGS, what's the email address?

The BGS has never answered my emails, if I were you I would phone them and insist on getting information.

I think that all administrative matters (Financial Undertaking, Language tests and College Membership) are within the ''jurisdiction'' of the BGS. All matters concerning academic results are within the jurisdiction of the LLM Admissions Committee, which apparently could only be contacted through Ms Wade.

In your case, I would call the BGS before doing anything else.

I've sent the phone number of BGS by mail. Check it.
Anyway, my case is that the only remaining condition is the English language, though I was notified that the faculty decided to waiver it.
So I called BGS this Tuesday, and they said that they knew the fact but the update(confirmation of admission) on CamSIS would be done by this week because they were very busy.
I guess you are also allocated a College but the update is delayed just because of the administrative matter.

Eventually my admission is confirmed on CamSIS~! Now I can start to prepare the visa application. Maybe the first thing is to gain a CAS number from PBI office.

Congrats!! By the way, what "the faculty" decided to waive English requirement? EAP or LLM? I am still struggling...

i agree this is so crazy..!

did anyone not make their conditions and are awaiting an appeal from the committee??

I missed my condition by a very small margin; wrote in about a month back and the Committee gave me a positive reply. Have sent in my academic transcript now, am waiting for my CAMSIS to be updated but in all honesty feeling a little panicky because I need to extend my UK student visa in time.

My offer has finally been confirmed! Now I just have to wait for my CAS to be issued

Keep on checking your CAMSIS because it seems like now they are speeding things up..

I sent them in June, but the Faculty only accepted my academic results on July 14th.

When I called BGS last week they told me they had received a notification from the Faculty on July 26th and that I just had to wait for them to transfer this information to CAMSIS. Apparently they process the documents in the order they receive them..

Does anybody know the circumstances under which Cambridge will allow a deferral for one academic year?

I was granted a deferral as they aren't running the modules I wanted to take this year, but I think they will also grant a deferral if you have personal circumstances making it difficult for you to come this year. Why are you wanting to defer?

Also, if anyone is still not able to get into contact with Suzanne Wade, I called this number +44 1223 330033 and asked to be put through to her. Both times I called this number it was answered quickly and I was put straight through. Hope that helps

Just called the BGS today and honestly I must say I've never been dealt with so rudely in my life before, either in person or on the phone. Perhaps the lady on the line is sick of people calling in to ask but I think it's our right to do so - it gives her no reason to speak to an enquiring student in such a rude and condescending manner.

Anyway the only useful bit of information - they're currently processing documents they've received on July 25, so anything that came in after hasn't been looked at yet.

Yeah, when I called BGS, the attitude was pretty much the same...
However, I managed to get in touch with Ms Wade and she found out that my documents are there and will be processed (someday, hopefully soon...) :)
Waiting is probably the only solution to all this mess...

Hi guys,

I'm a third year Law with Politics student from the University of Manchester. I'm thinking of applying for the Cambridge LLM.

I know you need a first but I was wondering whether you could still get a conditional offer although your current average is, as is the case with me, not quite a first (my second year amounts to 69,25%)? One of my marks has been 80% and one of my essays has been published.

Also, I did poorly in my first year (62,5%) but it won't count towards my degree. But since I won't have any other grades I fear they will still be taken into consideration.

Would you think it still makes sense to go for it? I do intend to graduate with a first.
