I spent three months working along with Prof Barnard (Cambridge) but when I asked her to act as one of my referee she told it is way better to ask that to someone who actually has known you during your Uni studies, which is much more valuable.
In other words, better a reference from a tutor of a not well known Uni rather than big names who don't know you that much...(and indeed I followed her suggestion and got an offer)...
Anyway you shouldn't worry too much: If I got in (and swear my CV is not a stellar one, average grades and some research experiences) everyone on here can make it!!!!
