Oxford BCL and Cambridge LLM Applicants 2009

pazos

I just got an e-mail from Merton (answering the enquiry I made a couple of days ago). No place for me there :S. Hope for better luck with my second choice which is Lincoln.

Is anybody else frustrated with the double application involved in the collegiate system? I mean, getting into Oxford is not enough!! Once you have had time to celebrate that you've been admitted you realize that you now have to cross your fingers to get a decent college to accept you... which has a real effect on your accomodation and quality of life once you get there!! Plus you can't be 100% sure of what the whole thing will cost you, until you know which college has decided to take you. I can't stop for this terrible wait for news to end!!

I completely understand angst and frustration. I was lucky to get my first choice college (University), but I suspect it was only because my supervisor is a fellow there, and he probably green lighted my application. My fear was that I'd end up in a modern college on the outskirts of town and lose out some on the Oxford experience. And I'm still waiting with bated breath hoping to get some funding from the Faculty of Law. But hey, we could be worse off.

I completely agree! Its so frustrating to wait for the responses from the individual colleges...although the saving grace for me was the line in the offer letter which said that college admission is guranteed!!

I was rejected by Merton, but was informed today that I got into Queen's. Needed to accept the offer by 28th May, but no news on scholarships whatsoever from Ox or Camb. HRoak, I assume that you would need to accept Univ Coll's offer much earlier?

Correct. I have 3 weeks from the date of the offer (April 20), so I have to accept in writing by May 11.

That's a bit of a rush. The results for Cambridge Trust and other Cam scholarships would not even be announced probably until july/august. Furthermore, didn't manage to get anything from the Clarendon funds, and nothing on the faculty scholarships yet. The whole thing is just ridiculous.

It may well be ridiculous, but the BCL is worth it.

You have a rough'n'tumble, exciting, terrifying year ahead.

By the way, in Oxford terms, "the outskirts of town" means anything more than a 5 minute walk!

That's true. But I think there's something to be said for the aesthetic experience in living in the heart of Oxford, no?

A few weeks back the faculty of law said they'd try to get us the results for the faculty scholarships by April, so hopefully they'll announce them soon.

Hey all,
Do u think Hughes Hall is a good choice for LLM students? I gave that as my 1st pref without doing much research only because it was a grad college and now I am regretting it. The campus seems very ordinary and the college seems quite far away from the law faculty. If I withdraw my application from Hughes Hall, it will go to my 2nd pref which is Trinity Hall. But if Trinity doesn't accept me, I could end up at a women-only college or even one of those newer colleges. which would be terrible. So what do you guys suggest. Should I stick with Hughes Hall or try my luck at Trinity?

Hi Reema,

You asked whether you should " withdraw your application from Hughes Hall". Are you sure that you are permitted to do this? How would you go about doing it? I recall it being explicitly stated in the Graduate Pack that " You will not be able to amend your College choices after submitting your application"

That being said, I am not familiar with the colleges, but I would advise against withdrawing your application at this late stage. Since college membership is probably a condition that you must fulfill by July 31st, withdrawing your application from your college of first choice will only delay an already muddled process and may place you at a disadvantage.

My camsis was recently updated to show my college of second choice, and even though I do not know much about Gonville & Cauis a part from the opportunities for funding, I am sticking to it.

I hope I have helped.

It is not possible to amend the college choices after submission of GRADSAF. I think Trinity does not accept LLM students - not sure though.

Caius is very popular for law. I have heard that there are lot of LLM students in Caius, so it is good to be with your class mates.

Regards.

Just a quick question on AHRC funding.
I applied for that but my camsis doesn't say anything about it. It only states information on Cam trust.

Is that for you also the case?

thanks

Cedric,

I applied for an AHRC grant, but it doesn't show up on CamSIS. I don't really have many other options left, since I'm a UK student. While I know international students have higher fees, I really do think it's a bit stupid that there's so many more funding opportunities for international students.

Thanks for your response !
I can only second your opinion because AHRC is also my last resort. But I'm happy that it is not supposed to be present on Camsis.
Coming from Western Europe, like us, funding is a nightmare...
Best of luck !

Expecting the next tranch of offers early May because that's when I had to respond accepting/rejecting the offer by.
