Oxford BCL and Cambridge LLM Applicants 2009

Suze, I might join you on the reapplication as I would do the BVC next year and hopefully Oxbridge before a pupillage. What are your ultimate ambitions?

Out of interest, for those who are currently in their final year, what is your current grade average? I've noticed that many have (as Nerxiz Nerv also states) had 2.1 averages with the condition placed upon them to get a first overall.

Tigerland - I really don't know what my ultimate ambitions are, in fact I feel like I have too many options ahead of me (which I know is a good thing, but terribly frustrating at the same time). I might just sell out and do the commercial thing eventually...we all gota eat, right? I'll see how I feel this time next year...

At King's, it is almost impossible to have a first average before you graduate. This is because 1) your first year grades do not count towards your final degree, 2) your degree grade comprises of the 4 best grades out of 8. So right now I have two firsts and two 2.1s...but my average is 68%. This year I have been told I only need a 70% and a 68% to get a first overall. Does that make sense? So my average is a 2.1, but my chances of getting a first overall are quite high.

That's what worries me with Cambridge and Oxford, because of course although I know I am capable of getting a first, it's not set in stone until results day...

Nervix Nerv - I thought the same, that I should have waited until I graduated and then apply. But one of my best friends rightly pointed out that if I had waited, then I would only have given myself one chance to apply. If I am rejected this time round, then at least I can apply again next year. But imagine graduating, then applying, then being rejected and having to reapply - I would have ended up with 2 spare years to fill before I could do the LLM or BCL...so maybe it's better to apply now before we've graduated, and if the news from Cambridge and Oxford isn't good, then we can always try again next year.

I have a friend who did the BCL last year, and he agreed that your chances are much better if you've already graduated with a first...

Yea you've got a point there, although I would probably not be reapplying if i get rejected since the plan is to do the LLM next year and start the LPC course the following year.

I'm in the same situation like Suze, 2 Firsts with 2 2:1s but my average is only 66%, meaning i will need two Firsts to get an overall First this year since my average is a bit on the low side.

Nice to have some freedom and choices available! That's interesting how your degree will be classed. Mine is an average across 12 modules (6 in the second year, 6 in the final year) and then the percentage is taken. But if you're in the 68% region you can get bumped up to a first if you have so many individual modules that are first class grade (I think it's perhaps 6 out of the 12). I'm on a 71% average for my second year, and should do a bit bit better in my finals (with a bit of luck!). Good luck for yours! Have you applied to Oxford as well?

Is that two firsts out of four final year modules? We do know that Cam does offer to 2.1 current gradings, especially as I am sure that your referees etc. and application will point to your ability to achieve those two firsts! Good luck!

Which uni are you at, Tigerland?

Thanks for the good luck, I definitely need it.

I have applied for the BCL...and would definitely take it over Cambridge any day...

Your classification is tougher i must say, because for our case a student is still able to get a First overall with 4 70s and 4 60s, with an average of 65%.

Yup I will need two more firsts in my final year. Thanks and good luck to you as well!

I have a conditional offer from LSE (impossible not to meet the requirements) and waiting from Oxbridge. If I will be rejected I don't know what to do... My dream has always been studying in Cam but I don't know if it's a good idea to postpone one year. How much is competitive the LSE LLM comparing with Oxbridge?
Thanks.

Oh dear! I hadn't checked the Discussion Board here for so many days, and looks like Cam offers are starting to pour in! I'd almost dismissed Cam till late March/April in my head! Fingers crossed now, what can I say. I suppose there should be some hope from the fact that I have conditional offers from King's and LSE (also one from SOAS) in hand, but again... from what I understand it's not necessary that if you get an offer from one good place, the other good place will like you too! The wait is getting too much now! Aargh! I think I'll just send out an email to Ms Wade in frustration asking her to tell me my application status soon! Lol...

P.S. - Jag, I'm also a fellow Indian in the waiting! :)

Umm... I'm sorry I'm sort of disconnected from the going-ons here, but how do you know about the meetings on Thursday and Friday Jag?

I too am waiting. I am convinced that I have missed out, but I don't want to check out camsis. If I don't receive an email soon then I assume I have missed out.

I will be interested to see the backgrounds of the people who are admitted. I am an Aussie. I have a good degree (first) for a mid-tier university but I have practised for a couple of years at one of Aus's best firms and before that, clerked to a Suprme Court judge (both jobs were pretty competitive to get).

Oh well, life goes on. haha

I think its to early to take such a view.. The first round was for exceptionals... Only 15 (may be lesser) seats have been allocated out of the 125-150 available. There are at least 3 more rounds (Feb, March, April) to go, and one never knows. One could be anxious, one could be nervous, one could be furious, one could be disgusted, but surely totally giving all and any hope is out of question, at least so soon...

I like the peptalk, Jag !
Btw: Couple of days ago I read that the Indian Supreme Court is 466 years behind schedule even with the new rule that every case gets a maximum of 4 minutes in court..
And me thinking Belgium was bad (we are just a few years behind :))
Any comments ;)?
