KCL or UCL

Hi,

I know this discussion has been going on forever but I really don't know which to choose for an LLM in finance and banking. Both have interesting courses and professors in this field....

Thanks!

Rankings change every year. UCL ranked 2. after Cambridge recently. I would prefer UCL since I would say it is slighltly better in this field. But both schools are very good and it depends more on personal feelings. I might be baised cos I am studying at UCL.....

The thing is, rankings don't matter that much.

Even if Oxford would be ranked fifth, it would still have greater value to get your degree in Oxford than in UCL, because everybody knows Oxford and is in awe for those who studied there.

King's College, at least in Belgium, is better known and considered as very good, whereas UCL is less known. Imo it is thus better to do your degree in King's.

This might ofcourse differ from country to country :)

I fully agree with the first point regarding rankings. But I do not agree with the second one. I would never choose university according to the fact if it is know or not in my country. Moreover, this is extremely difficult to find out since it depends on opinion of people you ask and also may change as well as rankings. I personally recommend to decide on basis of courses and teachers. KCL, UCL and LSE are in real life rated on the same level and are regarded as very good law schools. All have great and bad teachers. Finally, let us not overestimate impact of LLM on one´s career. It is ust something little extra on your CV - employers are interested much more in your work experience. But it is great experience - no doubts about it.

Mhmm in my country the biggest law firms really want their lawyers to have done an LL.M. in US or UK.

So in that branch it's rather "important" to do one :)

Ok. My last point is that KCL has much much nicer student bar than that ugly one of UCL. Beautiful view of Thames.... I am happy not to be studying at Kings since otherwise I would spend most of my time in this beautiful cultural facility....

Just out of curiousity,

does anyone know the state of the facilities in king's?

In particular:
(i) the library, is it well stocked?
(ii) the classrooms and lecture theaters

Santa, may I ask which country you are from? I have heard different opinions whether the major firms consider a master from a prominent university valuable.

i had applied to KCL nd UCL for LLM in International Commercial Law in mid-Oct, 2008 & got conditional offers from the colleges in mid-Nov and Dec end, respectively. I am in the final year of my bachelor's degree and do not know which of the two colleges i shud go for. I havent got a clear idea from ny1 till now. I need an overall aggregate of 60% for KCL & 65% for UCL to get the final offer. my aggregate is more than 65%. After completing my LLM, i wanna come back 2 india & start working. can any1 advise me regarding the college i shud opt among the two? M even interested in knowing which of the two offers better internship programme and a better placement back in india. people who are presently studying in any of these colleges, esp. the ones who are pursuing their LLM in the subject i hav opted are requested to give me an idea. alumnis please respond!
