Job Prospects UK/EU

Hi all,

I'm looking for some career advice here regarding applying for an LLM.

The options I liked most were

1. Either an LLM in EU Law at Maastricht

2. A Human Rights LLM at Essex or York Uni

3. An LLM in Shipping Law at Swansea Uni

I like all the areas of law listed in the aforementioned options, however, the factor which is most important to me is to manage to find a job abroad and not in my home country where I obtained my LLB.

Which one of the above options, or other, do you think will open more doors for me to manage to find a job either in the UK or else in an EU institution.

Just a rough background, my grades in the LLB are average therefore I am hoping the LLM would make me a more good looking candidate in the job market.

Any advice?

Thanks

What kinds of jobs would you be applying for? Do you speak Dutch? An LLM is not a very good enabler of international mobility - due to the fact that it's often very difficult to transition to practicing law in another country - and because of this you would probably need to take a pay cut or settle for a job with less responsibility than you are used to. If you don't speak Dutch, aim for one of the UK schools and ask them directly what kinds of jobs graduates have landed in the past. Be very clear about your intentions and see if they line up with reality.

I strongly disagree with the previous post. I did my LL.M. in Manchester and it really helped me to finally become attractive candidate also out of my country (Slovakia).

Now I have an opposite problem, it is very hard to find motivated, hard working juniors (even without LL.M), willing to relocate and do something for their career (financial industry btw.).

Anybody interested can pm me.

Conclusion: work hard and focus on your plan, everything is possible.
