Edinburgh University SOS! Application acknowledgement

Tatyana

Hi!
I have applied to MA program (LLM in Innovation, Technology and the Law, School of Law), and sent my application pack on January 11. According to the post services data, it was received on January 17. But the University did'n send me any acknowledgement... Moreover, I wrote to Postgraduate subdivision of School of Social Science more than a week ago (I asked them whether they received my application) and they have not answered me yet...
Dear Edinburgh applicants! Please tell me how did you apply? Did you receive any confirmation? Did you receive e-mails about offer or e-mail notification of rejection? Or may be you can tell me the name of person whom I can write to. I'm confused because I don't know what to do :-(

Hi, Tatyana, I work on the programme team behind the distance learning version of that same programme, so the procedures for on-campus aren't entirely different and I can think of a couple of things that may have happened.

You're right to seek acknowledgement sooner, rather than later, though I'd not worry too much quite yet.

Most likely, you'll find that an acknowledgement has been sent by email, though perhaps it has entered in to your spam-folder? If you use Hotmail or Yahoo! this is very likely, as I myself have troubles reaching people behind these services via email.

If you didn't give an email address, then perhaps acknowledgement has been issued by regular mail, and depending on where you are in the world, it might take up to 6 weeks to reach you (remember the Uni deals with over 120,000 applications each year by my calculations, so we don't courier all our post!)

Did you send the complete application (Application form, references, transcripts, Language certification if required?) If so, then your application has likely been passed down to the School of Law for assessment. If not, you will have been told that your application is being held at the College Office pending completion of the requirements.

Are you able to check with your postal service as to who signed for it? That will be useful in tracking it down. Also, if you can send me a private message or email to llm.distance@ed.ac.uk, I can ask a question or two on your behalf when I next speak with the team.

Hope this helps.

Colin.

Hi Tatyana

First, keep calm. There is nothing to worry about.

They are probably receiving a large number of applications these days and I am sure that the usual Christmas log is still delaying the acknowledge process a bit. Looks like this happens every year. Keep in mind that most of the people over there were away from Thursday 21st December to Monday 8th January.

Anyway, I am dropping you a private message with the e-mail contacts of two assistants at the Postgraduate Office. Both nice and friendly people. I am sure they could be of any help.

Good luck!

Dear Colin and Carter!
Thank you for help :-) I'll try to keep calm :-). The fact is that Edinburgh is my single choice for the present. And I will send my documents to other Unis only if I'll be unsuccessful! that's why I want to know whether my application is considered.
I don't use hotmail and yahoo! mailbox although my e-mail service is free of charge (Russian service mail.ru). But I always receive letters from UK (friends, hotels, etc.) without getting to spam folder. And I gave this e-mail in my application...
So I will try to find any information :)
Thanks again!!!

Congratulations - I presume your offer comes with no further conditions attached? Conditional or unconditional, either way - I look forward to meeting you when you come on-campus in a few months. Although I work on the distance learning version of your LL.M in Innovation, Technology and the Law, the on-campus version is very similar, including many of the same courses and modules, assessment methods, learning outcomes, degree title, the same tutors (Professor MacQueen, Professor Laurie, Dr Waelde, Mr Guadamuz and many others) who all have offices near me, so please pop by to say "hello" to the distance learning team when you're next passing by.

We also like our students to get involved with our online peer-reviewed journal, Script-ed (www.script-ed.org) so maybe you'd be interested in helping there.

It's a good community we have on-campus and on-line, and Edinburgh is a wonderful city, so I hope that you'll accept your offer immediately and have plenty time to experience some of Scotland before you join us here on-campus in the Autumn!

Congratulations once again,

Colin.
