Hi everyone,
I’m currently a corporate lawyer with three years of experience, primarily in commercial contracts and dispute resolution. I’m considering pursuing an LL.M to specialize in international arbitration, as it aligns with the type of work I want to focus on long-term. I’m particularly interested in programs in Europe or the U.S. that offer strong arbitration networks and practical opportunities (internships or moot courts).
My question is: for someone with my background, is it better to choose a more general LL.M with an international focus or to go straight for a specialized program in arbitration? Also, how important is the school’s location when it comes to building connections in this field? Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated! Thankyou!

Hi Blake. Given your background in commercial contracts and dispute resolution, specializing in international arbitration makes a lot of sense. I'd recommend going for a more specialized LL.M. rather than a general one, especially since you already know the area you want to focus on. It’ll give you more targeted opportunities, like internships with arbitration firms and moot courts focused on arbitration.
As for location, it’s definitely important. Studying in cities like London, Paris, or New York, where arbitration is a big deal, will give you better access to key professionals and networks in the field. Look for programs that offer both strong academics and practical experiences in those hubs.
