Hi Dewanda. Congratulations on getting the scholarship. Actually I was referring to the Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP) and not the Huygens Scholarship.

Hello all. I've been living in The Hague since May 15. Since then, there have been some developments in my life that will keep me in Holland for the next year.
My plan is to either extend my current legal internship, or to try and slip into a year-long LLM program starting in September (yes, I know that it is quite late). My top choice would be the Public International Law Programme at Leiden, and I am very anxious to know of my chances getting in at this point, and how full their classes currently are.
How much of a difference does it make that I have completed some courses towards my JD at a top law school in the US?
If anyone here has any insight into my chances of getting into Leiden or any other solid programs in the Netherlands, I would be ever grateful for your advice.

Dear SF,
I imagine your best chance is to submit the full online application (is this still available?) and contact the Admissions Office and Course Coordinator with a polite email explaining your situation (incl. that you are already in the country) asap. While this might be quite a bit of effort if the course is already full, you're probably decreasing your chances the longer you wait. There's always a chance that someone will reject an offer at the last minute and a spot might become available.
Good luck!
Alex

It also wouldn't hurt for you to drop by Leiden University itself since it's close by.

Hi Alex, thanks for the response :)
Leiden's online app is still available, and I'm done with the easy part. I may just send what I have tomorrow and request to send the recommendations asap.

I applied for an NFP scholarship and I received a letter stating that my application was not granted allegedly for the reason that the Master of Laws in Advanced Studies in European and International Business Law program was not allocated a fellowship.
Is this true or was this just a nice way of saying "sorry, you didn't make it"?
I once heard some NFP awardees say that the NFP board (Nuffic I think) actually decides the number of fellowships allocated to each course based on the number of NFP applicants for that course. That means there would be some courses with a lot of fellowships awarded and some course with no fellowships at all. One person I know was advised by the school she apply for admission (Ams Uni I think) that they have not been allocated NFP fellowships for some years so she should not bother apply for it.
So maybe they said the truth, it's not that you're not good enough, just unlucky.
That said, is there any way to know how many fellowships awarded for each course each year? I'm considering apply for that scholarship too. It's really strange that famous & big universities like Leiden or Amsterdam Uni are not allocated fellowships....
