LLM in IP from Turin Univ

The scholarship application information is in this link: http://wipo.int/academy/en/teaching/teaching_research/turin.html

Basically you would need to submit a complete application to WIPO if you want to be considered for the scholarship, and a complete, separate application to Turin University (ILO-ITC address I believe) if you want to be considered for admission separately from the scholarship offered by WIPO.

"hard to obtain the scholarship"? I don't know how to answer this. If you apply and dont' get it: yes. If you apply and get it: no. Maybe WIPO can answer the question on how difficult it was for them to select the final 15 candidates who receive scholarships. (By the way, the number of scholarships (i.e. 15) is published on the website.

The distance learning takes place in similar way as the other WIPO distance learning courses. Take a look at this link: http://wipo.int/academy/en/courses/distance_learning/catalog/c_index.html
Perhaps you should do the free DL001 or DL101 (or even 101PCT) to see the way the course is structured.

Regarding the stay in Turin, the Brochure clearly states that 5 September - 16 December is the RESIDENTIAL CLASSES IN TORINO. After that, there are no classes in Torino.

If you get the scholarship, accommodation is provided. Otherwise, you would arrange on your own. You can expect to pay between EURO 250 - 500 for a room. Other living expenses depend on lifestyle (cook at home vs. eating out)...

I hope this helps you and others who are thinking of applying!

Thanks! I know the information provided by WIPO website, but there is no specific precedure described, hence my email to WIPO in Geneva (I was advised to do so by the Course Secretariat). Your answer certainly clarifies things a bit, if there's anything else about this topic that You might share, I'd be grateful.

I didn't make myself clear about the period of stay in Turin. I understand it isn't necessary to remain in, or visit, Turin while finalizing the research paper (December 2011 to February 2012)?

Cheers for an exhaustive answer!

It is not necessary to remain in Turin for the third phase.

The submission procedure for WIPO is sending the requested papers by mail.

Hi,

I just read all your helping tips for LLM-IP at Turin University. Ihave a question here...my husband is going to Franklin Pierce for LLM-IPR, and plans to work there for few years after that. If i do my LLM from Turin, will i be eligible to practice in USA, or get a job in USA? Will this degree from Turin Univ will have weight-age in USA? Please help!

Hi rkv,

Congratulations to your husband!

About the ability to practice law in the USA, I believe it is a matter of the respective state's jurisdiction.

From what I understand, foreign lawyers cannot practice as legal attorneys in the States. SOME states allow foreing lawyers to sit on the Bar Exam so long as they've completed an LL.M. in that specific state, or in a US state. For foreing LL.M., I think it is not possible
(except if you have a degree in common law and it is from Canada or something like that, I am not sure how that one works...)

However, you have to do the research and find out for yourself in view of where you want to practice (I am not going to look for them -sorry). I am sure there are many posts --even within this website-- that discuss this topic specifically (i.e. foreign LL.M.'s in the US)

Hi valbj,

Thanks a lot for the quick response!

I understand the practicing criterion in USA differs from state to state. Further, I wanted to know the job prospects after the completion of this course.
Also I just talked to the Course Secretariat of Turin Univ, and was informed that to apply for schol, I just need to send the application packet to the WIPO office only. But in your previous post you have mentioned that the application has to be sent both to the univ and to WIPO office separately. Pl. guide me on this.

Job prospects: these are bound to improve!

Applicattion Submission: To me it is very clear.
1. If you apply for the scholarship (and admission): apply to WIPO by March 15. See point A, below.
2. If you apply for admission (no scholarship): apply to Turin University at the ILO address.See point B, below.
3. If you are applying to both 1 and 2 above, apply to both!
*This is also how it has worked in previous years.

Do take note that each one has a slightly different application form...

Hello valbj,
Thank you very much for exhaustive information about the course.

I have few questions:
How much scholarship do WIPO provide for this course?

Additionally, I read somewhere that they select four candidates out of 40 for some internship @ WIPO. Is it true?
If yes, then what are the selection criteria for that?

Thanking you in advance anticipating you help.

Hi,

About the scholarship, I'm not going to answer that since it is actually on the WIPO webpage --I don't intend to copy every piece of information and paste it here. You can look it up.

About the selection criteria, I cannot say for sure, but among other things it is achievements during the course, both on paper and in the class. By the way, I've heard of some years where there were 2 or 3 people selected to do the internship; I had not heard of four, although that seems possible for some years.

Good luck applying!

Hi valbj,

Thank you for sharing so much of important info about the programme. I have certain queries. Please reply them:

1) I am already a LLM student (studying subjects other than IP). would this be a prejudice to my application? Can you recall any of your colleagues who were having a LLM degree already before being admitted to the programme?

2) Were there any indian students with you?

Dear Valbj,

Thank you for your prompt reply and the information.

Ive gone through WIPO website but was unable to get scholarship details. Only information they have provided is each scholarship includes air ticket, accommodation and full boarding at the campus of the ITC / ILO in Turin and registration fees.

What I would like to know, whether like other Ph.D and scholarship funded programs, WIPO too gives some lump sum stipend OR just pay for fee and accommodation only?

I can't see how having more education in the legal field would be prejudicial. There were other people with specializations in other legal fields.

I don't know how the admissions committee selects people, so I cannot tell you exactly what the criteria is or how they view a candidate's profile.

There were no Indian students in my class, but I am sure there have been in the past.
