I still haven't got confirmation about whether I can use a one way ticket but I hope to be in Leiden around 16 August. Is there anyone not on an EU passport?
No word from housing either.

Hey everyone!
Haven't posted on here in a while.
Some news:
- EU/EEA/Swiss tuition for 2007/2008 is set at 1,538
- International tuition has been set at 10,900
- Housing distribution was supposed to start at the beginning of June, but was delayed by a week or two. They should be assigning housing by now. Priority goes (roughly) according to when you sent in the 500 deposit. Housing will send you an email with an offer.
- You need a legalized Birth Certificate to take to the City Hall in Leiden. If your country is not a party to the Apostille Treaty (e.g.: Canada) its a two step procedure. Apostille Treaty nations follow a different procedure. Non Apostille: First, take it to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your country and have the signature verified. Theyll stamp it and/or give you a paper to attach to it. After this is done, you complete the second part by taking it to the Dutch Embassy in your country and ask them to legalize it. Theres a fee and it takes a few days.
- You need to send them a sealed copy of your transcript upon graduation, if you graduated this June.
I haven't made any firm arrangement yet, but I'll try to be there for Friday, 31 August. I'll either take the direct KLM flight from Montreal, or Swiss and transit in Zurich.

Does my birth certificate have to be legalised if it is in English?
The pre-departure information (http://www.leiden.edu/prospective/index.php3?m=1&c=205) indicates that:
Please note that you will need your birth certificate when you pick up your MVV at the Dutch Embassy or Consulate in your country of origin or residence, and again after arrival in order to obtain your residence permit. (This also applies to students from the United States). We advise you to make sure your birth certificate is in order as early as possible, as this will save you a lot of practical problems after arrival.
This birth certificate must be in Dutch, English, French or German. If it is not, you will need to have it translated and either legalised by the Dutch Embassy, or, if your country has signed the Apostille treaty of The Hague, you should obtain an apostille stamp. Please check www.minbuza.nl for a list of countries that are part of the treaty and the website of the HccH for a list of competent authorities in your country that can issue the apostille.

The purpose of the legalization is not a question of language; rather, it is a question of verifying that the civil authority (Minister, etc...) that signed the document is indeed authorized to do so.
In Canada and other countries whom have not signed the Apostille treaty, the procedure for legalization is as described in my previous post. For other countries, it is a matter of getting an Apostille stamp - a procedure I am not familiar with.

Thanks... I can see this getting complicated, given that I was not born in Australia (where I have lived since 1992)!!

Called the housing office, the lady there told me offers are late this go round. Those at the top of the list (i.e. those who sent in the deposit early) should get an offer by email either end of this week (maaaaybe), but most likely offers will start going out next week.

Hey,
I'll also be starting in September in the PIL program at Leiden (some of you I have already talked to)...
What is everyone doing about health insurance? I'm not quiet sure which one I should go with... Any recommendations?
Thanks and see you all soon,
Claudia

I will arrive in Leiden on September 1. probably cutting it fine! oh well. health insurance, i think EU people can get the EU Medical Card but you have to be a resident before u can get it which means waiting until you arrive ... hmm. Looking forward to meeting everyone very very soon! :)

I had a problem with the housing deposit - I completed the credit-card section on my acceptance letter, but apparently this wasn't received by the housing office and I got an email telling me that they wouldn't be able to guarantee a room... it appears to be sorted now, but I hope I won't be at the bottom of the list now :( We'll see...

I got the exact same message! I rang them up and they said that they had failed to enter the credit card deposits on the system. Fingers crossed

Looks like we'll have to crash at illy's place for a while, since she was probably the first one to send her deposit.

I'm confused by all the emails about these induction events that are planned. I'm arriving on the 21st so will likely miss lots anyways, but what is everyone signing up for? I really don't want to be in among all the the first-year students for this stuff...
Also, I'm keen to meet people before I go so does anyone here use facebook or similar?

If I am lucky enough to graduate from Leiden, my face will look like a book.

wooohha! illy's mine! haha ;)
If you still haven't got an answer on your application - you should just call the International Office ask them. If they tell you they haven't heard back from the Faculty yet, ask for the number of the Faculty member and call them directly. That's how I found out I was in.
If you find you need to look for housing yourself, look in The Hague too since it's close by.

Just got an email from J.I. van Delft of the Housing Office. They made me an offer for Horizon House, Hugo de Grootstraat 32 on the second floor.

They also made me an offer on the second floor of the Horizo House (Room 88). But only until January 31, 2008 :(
