Is anyone considering the LLM in Public Law w/ criminal law specialization? I am an American lawyer, practicing for 10 years, trying to choose an LLM program. I have looked at several schools online, but it is difficult to know what the schools are really like. Any feedback?

Brent: I am afraid I dont know anything about that. I would advise you to open a new thread with your own topic so that all the users can see what you are asking.
Lulu: Nice to see your back and 新年快乐 to you too! Here in NY there was a parade for the NEw Year, alitlle chaotic but nice, we had the best 架子 afterwards I have had so far outside china. So you are going to Groningen after all?

Brent, I am also thinking about applying to the Public International Law LLM with International Criminal Law Specialisation offered by Leiden university. There is a Supranational Criminal Law Lectures Series which looks interesting: http://www.ljil.leidenuniv.nl/index.php3?m=132&c=103 Have you looked at the faculty? The link is: http://www.llmpil.leidenuniv.nl/index.php3?m=2&c=30

Marks, thanks for the link. I have not checked out the faculty yet; I have only heard of the school through its connection to the Hague international courts. I am going to subscribe to the international law journal and get up to speed. Has anyone applied to the LLM program yet? Been accepted?
Star, I wish I had time for "the festival" -- too much work getting ready to make this move, which means putting my law practice on hold for at least a year.

Lulu: No I am sorry, I dont know anything about Health Law but if you can afford it, UK is always a very good choice.
Star:
Welcome back! The parade was actually not all that. But we also came a little late, anyway we had good jiaozi afterwards so that saved the day...

Hi Marks,
sorry i was a bit slow in replying. I am still enjoying my holiday now. I didnt know anyone that has been accepted by the programme you mentioned. But you can check the link of the international criminal law centre at Leiden.

Hi Julius,
What's up?
Lulu has decided to go to the UK, and she has returned to Tianjin today. I think i will go back to Beijing very soon as well. But I will drop at this website as usual. I am working on my graduate thesis now. I still dont have many ideas about my topic :(

Hello Star! Yes, I know what you are talking about, how many pages do you have to write? And when is your LLM starting, around October?
As to me: I will go back to Germany for a week, time flies, but I am looking forward o seeing my friends at home. I hope they let me back in again (to the US). ;-)

I haven't been accepted yet. In fact, I haven't applied yet. I believe the deadline is April 1st for the one year program beginning in September. I am still trying to decide whether to go this year or next (2006). I have two trials coming up and one appeal matter that I will have to come back to the US to handle, and if I can't work my schedule around these cases, I will have to wait.
I am jealous that everyone here is still enjoying the "student life." Its alot different once you start working.

Well, difficult to compare as you haven't said what your goal is....
However, major changes are happening in the European Tax sector (and Internationally)
The largest European Tax Educational Institution is at the European Tax College (Tilburg and Leuven jv).So it would make sense for the leading European Tax Professors to be there.
Apart from the USA,I think Sydney University is good and the European Tax College as above)

Hey Julius,
I am going back to Beijing very soon. My LLM starts around September. When will you be back in Germany again? I am sure I will travel to Germany during my stay in europe. About my essay, 10, 000 words is required. That isn't very much if I know what to write.
hope you enjoy your stay back home :)

Hi Kek,
is this advice for me? Thanks... I haven't decided my major yet, business law has a large scale. I think I will decide it later, however, so far I am quite interested in corporate law. I don't think I will ever choose tax law, I still remember the scores I got for my Tax Law don't look good ;)

Hi Brent,
Don't be jealous. Did you envy those who are working when you were still a student? hehe, but I have to admit that I love campus life. Honestly, I do think working experience would be an edge when you take the LLM. I am going to do my master soon after my first law degree. The disadvantage is obvious that I still don't know the specific field I want to work in :(

Hi, I just found this page....
I am wondering no one mentioned Utrecht University´s excellent LLM programs, far more useful and more respected by German professors than the ones offered by Leiden University. Utrecht is the alma mater of Rene Descartes and a lot of Nobel Prize winners. Also, it has the Prestigious Masters Scholarships for excellence in science which are highly renowned. I would eye the following LLM programs in Utrecht University : Law and Economics, International and European Law, Comparative Government and Good Governance, International Business Law, etc. One of the standout qualities of Utrecht´s LLM programs is the Moot Court in International Law and the Moot Court in European Law. This is wonderful training for those who want to sharpen their debate and argumentation skills in international &/or european law.
If one plans to have a career in international relations, I advise Utrecht University. Anyone who studied there is full of praise for the quality of teaching, method, and course programmes. I dont think there is any other university in Netherlands which offers a more useful, highly sought array of LLM programs than what Utrecht has. Ask any official of the United Nations or of any international institution, compare the LLMs of Leiden with that of Utrecht´s and the latter will win hands down.
Take my advise on this one. Choose Utrecht and be in step with the trends in international law.

Utrecht University and Leiden University are both ranked among the 100 best universties in the world in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2004 (39. and 63., see http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2004/top500list.htm). However, I think Leiden's LLM programme is bigger (?) and more focused on international students. The LLM GUIDE popularity ranking places Leiden in the 7. and Utrecht in the 101. position (according to views).
