pls i am filling application forms for llm at uct,and an not clear in certain areas like the accredidation certificate,do you need it before you apply or after you have been given addimission.And also what documents do you need to submit along side ans also do you have an idea of payments.thanks in advance.

I am so happy about the fast and effective response fron uct am on my way to making it to cape town.Mean while my greatest problem is the accreditation certificate its not fair on the part of applicants.posting two sets of transcripts to two different institutions its crazy and expensive.so in the event you are refused an accreditation certificate what now happens then.pls can someone comment on this pls.

As far as I've seen, UCT offers great accom for post-graduates, even catering for small families. In terms of prices,think it's quite reasonable.On campus, you'd probably pay about the equivalent of say US$4 000 a year, and that'd include like two/three meals a day etc, so comparing to other Universities worldwide, it's dirt cheap!Alternatively, renting a flat somewhere nearby, which would be self-catering, would be maybe slightly less, but then you'd have to search and see what area you'd like to live in, and obviously rates will vary accordingly. My advice, get accom on campus and enjoy the campus life and the surrounds of CT! Where are you from by the way?

I think you and I are doomed never to communicate. For the past three days I have been writing such a nice e-mail to send to you, but it really has just not been sending, comes back with some error! Since it seems no one really cares much for LLMs in Africa, we may as well use this form of communication.

I'm planning to move to Capetown too. How ever i already have a JD from the USA. Does anyone know what (if anything) I'd need to do to practice law in SA ... or if I have to do an LLM program first, and how long it would take seeing that I am already a practicing attorney in another country?

I have got just one question: How much is housing and living for one year in Cape Town? Thx

Flasche: if you go to UCT's website, there's a section that deals with international students and it tells you how much you can expect to pay. Generally, I would think it's in the range of $20k, American, for the four semesters. This would be both tuition and boarding and lodge. I would strongly suggest you go on the website as it will be more accurate than what I estimate.

those of you who are planning to go to the University of Cape Town. It is beautiful. You will really like it! I did my LLB and LLM from there and i have no regrets. The lecturers are wonderful and the city? It is spectacular; you have the mountains, the sea... what else can you ask for??

I am from Canada and I am looking for a good LL.M in English outside of North America (I will graduate from a french-speaking canadian civil law school in 2010), and I'm interested in programs offered by UCT and Stellenbosch.

My questions are also on safety and social environment that we find in SA right now, since what we see in the news from here it's not very good. Is that different in Capetown and his area ? Do the best students of South Africa all flight to Australia ?

It infuriates me how the world media makes South Africa seem like it's some crime war zone. It is not. Yes, crime is an issue, but for Christ's sake, crime is an issue in New York! It does depend largely on the parts of town that you are in. Yes, crime is worse in SA than it is in other parts of the world, granted, but it's not the only thing that defines my country.

Cape Town, as I have said numerous times on this board, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And by the way, crime is somewhat better in CT than it is in Johannesburg, for instance. UCT is a greatly reputed university and the quality of education you will receive there will be superb.

Lastly, the best students from SA do not all go to Australia. There was a great migration of people who went to Australia and England after the advent of democracy, but you can guess the reasons for that. A lot of people are actually going back to SA becuase they realise the quality of life, at the price in SA, is pretty good.

Didn't mean to sound bitter, but I have become fiercely protective of my country, especially since living abroad and seen that SA has a pretty high standard of life and deserves more than just the constant crime badge that it gets tagged with.

Oh and by the way, Stellenbosch is also a great university, about 40 mins away from CT, and nestled in one of the best wine regions in the world.

Look at pros and cons and decide, just don't be overwhelmed by the crime issue because it's not the only thing about South Africa.

Lit, if I am interested about the programs at UCT and Stellenbosch, it is because I think your country is absolutely great. I can assure you people here have only good words toward South Africa. The only thing is that we just heard massive arrivals of people from elsewhere in Africa have arise violence and crime rates recently.
