The Program
The CUHK offers five LLM programmes. All LLM programmes are delivered in the central district on Hong Kong Island at the CUHK Graduate Law Centre, a state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Hong Kong’s legal and business district. Each programme is taught in English by first-rate academics with specialist knowledge and global experience. Our LLM programmes offer an excellent opportunity for academic and professional growth, delivered by one of the world’s top universities in one of Asia’s most exciting cities.
The LLM in Chinese Business Law provides students with a structured course to study the principles, processes, institutions and methods of civil and commercial law in China in the context of an evolving political, economic and social environment. It is designed to enable students to develop a broad intellectual outlook on the legal aspects of doing business with China.
The LLM in Common Law is designed to furnish students with substantive knowledge of core common law subjects, and develop the skills necessary to engage with the common law tradition more widely. Through the electives, students are given an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the common law or complement it with the study of new subjects.
The LLM in Energy and Environmental Law aims to offer students an in-depth understanding of the legal aspects governing the key challenges of energy security and environmental protection. Students are trained for practice in the areas of energy investment and trade, project finance and infrastructure development, clean energy and climate change mitigation, with a focus on the specific energy and sustainability challenges of the Asia-Pacific region. The courses build on the expertise in energy and environmental law and investment and trade law at CUHK Law, and benefit from the participation of leading international practitioners in the field of energy and environmental law.
The LLM in International Economic Law is designed to offer students an intensive course of study of the law and practice of cross-border business transactions. Students are trained for practice in key areas such as international sales and finance, M&A (mergers and acquisitions), WTO law and international banking law. Skills training modules ensure that graduates of the LLM in International Economic Law are able to conduct both practical work and independent research in relevant subject areas.
The LLM in Legal History Programme is designed to equip students with substantial knowledge and expertise in both the substance and methodology of transnational legal history research. The LLM in Legal History is an elite programme, admitting only a small number of high-quality students. Unlike traditional taught postgraduate programmes, the LLM in Legal History has a hybrid structure, combining classroom learning and research elements. In addition to their classes, students will complete a substantial research project under the supervision of a member of the faculty, accounting for half of their credits. Through their involvement in the programme students will acquire substantial research, writing and presentation skills, paving the way to successful academic, policy and practice careers.

The Law School
The Faculty of Law was established in 2005. With the Faculty of Law’s emphasis on independent research and active, engaged learning, as a CUHK law student, you will hone your intellectual and professional skills, while developing a broad perspective on the law through a unique exposure to the different traditions of law in Hong Kong, China, the Asia-Pacific region, and the world. CUHK students are encouraged to look behind the rules of law to the underlying values, purposes, and policies that underpin our legal systems.
