The Law School
Essex Law School was founded in 1980, and has developed an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. At postgraduate level, we offer a range of LLMs and MAs broadly categorised in two distinct areas: Business Law and Human Rights. Our research is organised through research clusters in Business Law, Human Rights, Public Law, Criminal Justice, Health Law, Law and Technology and Socio-Legal Studies.
The Human Rights Centre received the Queen's Anniversary Prize in Human Rights in 2010, reflecting its leading international reputation. The award recognises the University's pioneering role in advancing the legal and broader practice of international human rights. The Human Rights Centre, which was established in 1982, has since trained thousands of students from more than 100 countries. They work for international organisations such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and in non-governmental organisations including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. Our graduates also work in the field to safeguard human rights in conflict-torn countries including Bosnia, Kosovo, Nepal and Sudan.
We work on projects across Business law, as it applies in a national and transnational context. This includes Trade law, European Union law, Competition law, Corporate Responsibility, Banking and Insurance law, Financial Crime and Regulation, Company law, Consumer protection, Investment law, Internet, Broadcasting and Digital regulation, Contract and Tort law.
In our work on these topics we strive to develop efficient trade mechanisms, as well as effective competition, corporate governance and financial market management. Other aspects of our work seek to balance various commercial interests with the protection of the environment and the preservation of human, social and economic rights, such as privacy, freedom of expression and association, access to services of general interest, consumer protection and safe food.
Alumni
Our Essex Law School graduates have gone on to a wide variety of careers in international and intergovernmental organisations or employment with governments across the world, in non-governmental organisations, in commerce and banking and, of course, in the legal profession and the judiciary.
