The University

Lyon Catholic University was founded in 1875 and combines respect for Christian heritage with a spirit of openness. It welcomes a diverse range of students from every nationality with a variety of philosophical and religious beliefs, and respects freedom of conscience and secularism.

The Law School

The Law School is highly internationalized in teaching and in research, demonstrated notably by its numerous agreements with partners around the world, classes taught in English, international programs for law students and professionals and guest lecturers from abroad.

The Program

Lyon Catholic University offers two distinct LL.M. programs in the field of international business and trade law, and three dual LL.M. programs with St John's University School of Law (New-York), City University London Law School (UK) and the Maynooth University (Ireland) :

- LL.M. IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS LAW (DUAL PROGRAMS WITH CITY UNIVERSITY LONDON LAW SCHOOL - UK, MAYNOOTH UNIVERSITY - IRELAND)- Master 1

The LL.M. in International Business Law degree enables law graduates to further their legal education by gaining a systematic understanding of critical issues at the forefront of select areas of international business law. And this thanks to high academics and legal practitioners and officials of trade missions and international organizations. The program also aims to develop legal research, reasoning, writing, advocacy and teamwork skills, which are highly sought after by employers.

Students have the choice between three alternative tracks :
- Lyon Track : Two semesters in Lyon (from September to May). Successful students will be awarded a French Master 1 degree as well as a University's LL.M. International Business Law degree. Students will have the possibility to spend the second semester in Widener University Law School (USA).

- London Track : Two trimesters in London (from September to December, and from January to March) at our partner University, City University London Law School (UK), and one trimester in Lyon (from April to September). This second track is jointly provided by UCLy and the City University London Law Schools. At the end of the three semesters, successful students will be awarded a French Master 1 degree and a Specialized Master of Laws (LL.M.) by City University London Law School (specialization to be chosen among many options such as Banking and Finance, Maritime Law, contract, etc.)

- Maynooth Track : One semester in Lyon (from September to December) and one semester in Ireland at our partner University, Maynooth University Law School (from January to May). This third track is jointly provided by UCLy and Maynooth University. At the end of the two semesters, successful students will be awarded a French Master 1 degree and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) by Maynooth University.

-LL.M IN EUROPEAN AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND INVESTMENT LAW (DUAL DEGREE WITH ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW - NEW YORK CITY)- Master 2

LL.M. in European and International Trade and Investment Law offers 2 alternative tracks either Lyon Track or St John’s Track.

- Lyon Track: Two semesters in Lyon (from September to May). Successful students will be awarded a French Master 2 of European and International Trade and Investment Law (French official Master 2 degree) and a LL.M. degree from Lyon Catholic University.

- St John’s Track: One semester in Lyon (from September to December) and one semester in New-York, at our partner University, St John’s University (from January to May). At the end of both semesters, successful students will be awarded a Master of European and International Trade and Investment law (French official Master 2 degree) and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) by St John’s University (New-York).

This full-time LL.M. covers major existing European and multilateral trade and investment agreements and their interaction with the WTO with a particular focus on the European Union.Topics include regional trade agreements (NAFTA, CAFTA, TPP), international and European trade law, trade and development, TRIPs agreement, trade preferences, international banking regulations, international customs practices, bilateral investment treaties and dispute resolution.

- FRENCH LANGUAGE COURSES CAN BE TAKEN FOR FREE AT THE UNIVERSITY

Regardless of your level of French, the Law School offers free French language courses for all the students. Our experience has shown that students who are comfortable with the language have an easier time assimilating into the culture and have broader experiences during their stay in France. Whether your ultimate goal is to practice law in French, or just take advantage of learning a new language, there is sure to be a class that corresponds to your objectives & level. Students are given a placement test at Orientation and put into a group which corresponds to their level. Classes meet 3 times a week for an hour and a half.

The Faculty

Our Faculty work with Leading Companies and International Organizations (EU, WTO, OECD) and thus bring real-world knowledge into Lyon Catholic University's classrooms. This combination of academic skills and real world experiences will help you shed a light on the key questions of international business law. Moreover, you will have a unique opportunity to engage with a dedicated Faculty in smaller classes.

Our teaching staff are specialists in their fields of study and come from a wide range of organisations or firms : the legal division of WIPO, the European Patent Office, the OECD Consumption Taxes Unit, the Trade Policy Review division of the World Trade Organization abd also teach in prestigious universities : HEC Paris, Georgetown University, the City University in London...

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to have an undergraduate degree in law (a French Licence, an LL.B. or equivalent) or in a related discipline (eg : political science) for the L.L.M. I International Business Law and an undergraduate degree in law (a French Licence, a LL.B. or equivalent) and a Postgraduate degree and in any event at least 4 years of undergraduate studies for the L.L.M.in European and International Trade & Investment Law.                                                                             Acceptance of applicants with other types of diplomas will be determined by an Admission Committee which may also take into account relevant professional experience. 

The programme requires that applicants possess a good level of English language. Therefore we only accept applicants with a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, a minimum TOEFL IBT score of 90 or CAE score of 58. Nevertheless, we might consider experience establishing the command of English language.
Students applying for the London track should meet the City Law School language requirements : IELTS score of 7 (with at least 6 in every item) or the Cambridge Advanced Certificate;
But more than that, we admit talented and intellectually curious students.

Financial Aid

The Catholic University of Lyon has a strong commitment to ensuring access to our program to students of limited economic mean. That's why, our University offers tuition waivers (that may account up to half of the tuition fees) for international students who demonstrate financial need and academic excellence.

Location

The Catholic University is located in the heart of the city of Lyon in a vibrant urban setting with a rich cultural and historical heritage. The city of Lyon was founded by the Romans in the 1st century B.C. and has played a major role in Europe's political, cultural and economic development ever since. Lyon was capital of the Gauls under the Roman Empire, a great cultural and trading centre during the Renaissance and a powerful industrial city in the 19th century. It is now a major European metropolis, shaped by many influences through ages. Lyon's rich cultural heritage reflects the various eras of the city's development, from ancient times and the Renaissance up to today.

The Catholic University of Lyon is surrounded by a rich world of culture and innovation. Within a few kilometers from our city centre campus you can find the Gallo-roman museum, the museum of Fine arts, the Opera of Lyon, or the Lumière museum where cinema was invented back in 1895. It is a 10-minute walk from campus to the middle aged quarter, which is ranked by UNESCO on the World Heritage List, home to numerous restaurants, pubs, bars among others as well as numerous special events, such as the Nuits de Fourvière, the Nuits Sonores festival -one of the premium electro music festival in Europe- live music and free outdoor movies. For nature lovers, the Golden Head park and its botanical gardens or the Parilly hippodrome are nearby along with numerous jogging and biking trails along the Saone and Rhone river. Sport aficionados, who want to discover soccer will appreciate to go to Gerland stadium to watch the Olympique Lyonnais play.

Within a few kilometers, you also have access to the famous Beaujolais area with its vineyards and castles. Two hours away on the East are the Alps, with stunning landscapes and some of the finest ski resorts in Europe. From Lyon, you are at the heart of France and Europe.

So whether you chose to visit the Saint Jean cathedral, see the elephants at the zoo, or just enjoy being in one of the most pleasant cities in Europe, there is much to see and do in Lyon.

The Catholic University of Lyon offers students to stay in a student residence or with a host family. Our Accommodation Service will also help you to look for a room, studio or flat in Lyon.

There are many accomodation possibilities to find a private room or a colocation pretty close to the university.

The Catholic University of Lyon extends a personal welcome to international students who come to Lyon.

You will be offered help and support throughout your visit to make sure your stay is successful. Courses offered by the French Language and Culture Institute will allow you to improve your knowledge of the French language and culture.

Sports
Aerobics, athletics, rowing, climbing, riding and football... Around twenty sporting activities are available all year round, regardless of your level and whether it's just for fun or competitive (at regional and inter-regional university championships, national or even international competitions).
