Which Tax LL.M. program?

y2nicco

Hello,

I have been accepted to Loyola-LA, Northwestern, and Georgetown. Unfortunately, after being WL at NYU, I was rejected. I have to make my decision by next week, and it is a tough one to make.

I am an LA native and plan on staying in LA due to family considerations. I know that GT is the "best" of the three but my concerns about GT and NU relate primarily to how much trouble I may have finding a job here since I have few established connections and will be missing out on opportunities to theoretically establish future connections by not being in LA for the next year. That being said, upon my return to LA after completion of a program, would I have an easier time getting a job after GT/NU or after going to Loyola?

Basically, i am just wondering if NU and GT LL.M.s carry enough weight in LA so that I would be able to find a job easier than (or as easy as) I would if I were to go to Loyola. I know there are a lot of other considerations that factor in (JD school, rank, employment history, etc.) but if you could lend me your opinions from a purely academic standpoint, I would very much appreciate it. I know that finding a job in this market isn't easy, so I do understand that there is a possibility that I may not find a job with any of the three programs... anyhow, thank you for your help!

I would go to Georgetown, especially if you have an interest in one of the areas of the specialty certificates that GT offers (T&E, EB or SALT). Im going to NYU, but had I not gotten in, I would have gone to GT and done that. Although there is a huge benefit to going to school in the city where you want to practice, given that the program is only 2 semesters and you already have a strong connection to LA, I think it will be somewhat easy for you to target LA employers while at GT.

If you decide not to go to Loyola, then I would definitely go to GT over NU, as GTs tax LLM is more nationally recognized . You might also try posting your question on the career forum at taxtalent.com.
