What is the value of an LLM for an American attorney within the US job market? Does an LLM really make an attorney more marketable? Does it help him progress through the ranks? Is it worthwhile for a junior American attorney, intending to practice in the US, to pursue a US LLM?

I have the exact same question! What did you decide to do? Based on other board discussions, I believe that an LLM is valuable only if a school's particular program is directly related to an area of practice a person would like to specialize in.
If continuing in practice will provide the requisite "education", then stick with practice. If a person is unhappy on their respective and current path, then consider how a particular LLM program will improve your lawyering skills, and go for it (if applicable).
In the end, I'm still uncertain but leaning.

Also, what I've heard is that if you went to a not-so-good JD (not top 15-20 US News) but managed to get into a top LLM, it migth be worth it. I know, for instance, people who went to St Johns for their JD and then took an LLM at Columbia

The value of an LLM equals the amount you are willing to pay for it. Technically speaking. Sorry that doesn't actually help.

For a foreign lawyer moving to NY, what's the real value of a LLM? Would i be able to be hired after i pass the Bar? Would it help the issue that i'm an american citizen? I graduated of law at dominican republic, where it exists a civil law system, official language is spanish. I was born and raised at NY. ockquote>The value of an LLM equals the amount you are willing to pay for it. Technically speaking. Sorry that doesn't actually help.

That is the problem. Before we can determine if we are willing to pay for it, we need to determine the financial return for obtaining a certain LLM. Is the return monetary and additional knowledge which gives us an advantage over our opposition? Is it just a degree with no teeth for an American attorney? Will it open doors?
