Vanderbilt LLM 2012

Hi Everyone!

I am also one of the LLM student at Vanderbilt University, graduating in 2012. What bobcd says is completely correct and if I would have to choose again, I would definitely choose for Vanderbilt again!

Vanderbilt has a smaller LL.M. program, which leads to a very personal approach. Not only do the professors really know their students and is their door always open, also the (J.D.) students are very welcoming and want to get to know the international students, which is not always the case with larger programs.

Maybe it might help you to know some of my reasons to choose for Vanderbilt:
1) The impressive business law program and Vanderbilt's reputation in this area. The choice of courses in general is pretty impressive, but especially if you would like to pursue the Law & Business program, you will find what you want.
2) Several professors are some of the most brilliant minds in their area, such as Prof. Randal Thomas (Corporations, M&A, ...), Prof. Daniel Gervais (IP) and Prof. Jim Blumstein (Constitutional Law, Health law).
3) If you compare the way Cynthia and the Vanderbilt admissions team handle your admission, with the way other law schools send you your admission letter, you already know what distinguishes Vanderbilt from other law schools. People at Vanderbilt really care about the wellbeing of their students.

Also: as bobcd already mentioned: Nashville is an amazing city that has way more to offer than only country music.

I have never had second thoughts about Vanderbilt and I am pretty sure you won't regret it either. If you would have any specific questions, feel free to contact me.

I would like to state that it is not easy for LLMs in general to find a job in the US, since the current job market is still limited because of the crisis and law firms prefer to hire JDs. That being said, I would also like to tell you that one of my LLM-friends at Vanderbilt actually found a job in a NYC law firm, so there are definitely job prospects.

Vanderbilt Law School career services does a pretty good job in helping you with that search as much as possible. I've had general information workshops, but my career counselor also helped me reviewing my resume and cover letters. Additionally, they participate in the ISIP New York Job Fair for LLMs in february. Employers from all over the world come here to interview (only) LLMs, which can lead to job opportunities in the US, your home country and even other countries. Both me and my friend found a job because of that job fair: I found one in my home country, he found one in NYC.

I have heard from several employers that Vanderbilt has a very good name when it comes to job candidates.

Last but not least, I would like to mention that an unpaid internship in the US might be a little easier to find than a paid job, but you have to see for yourself whether you are interested in that.

Hey Guys!

Congratulations on everyone who's been accepted into Vandy's programme! I have no doubt we're going to have an excellent year ahead of us. The admissions committee at Vanderbilt truly is excellent! Especially Cynthia Coleman she's doing a fantastic job.

I have a question for the current students, I have been accepted into the International Legal Studies Programme and I'm hoping to apply for an externship whilst at Vandy. Could you tell me how competitive/ when exactly is it conducted/how long is it for?

Thanks

T

Hey guys,

I've been admitted. However, I would like to know what do you think about this: I was also accepted in UCLA which is a great school, but Vandy offered me USD 20.000 of scholarship.

I'm interested in Corporate and Commercial Law.

If you were in my shoes which school would you choose, and why?

Vandy is a very very WARM school and definitely worth applying for! Even though I eventually made up mind attending UPenn, it was quite a tough call then.

As for GPA, I think it all depends on your work experiences, as well as extra-curricular activities. Say, it won't be such an important factor if you have long years of work exp or other exp that makes you stand out from other applicants. Take myself as example, I was ranked the last-25% back to college, but I still get admitted. However, if you are just a graduate, then GPA may account for more than other factors in deciding your admission.

Anyway, EXCELLENT school! I believe, you won't regret. At least, must try to apply for it, no matter enrolling or not in the end. Not to mention, the great chance of being awarded financial aid (Mine's $20,000)!!!!!!
