Hi guys!
I'm applying to several universities both in the USA and in the UK. I'm Italian and I'd prefer to remain in Europe, but I'm very fascinated from the US. I really don't know what is best.
Here's the question.
Does somebody know if taking an LLm in the US is marketable in Europe and especially in the UK as well? Or afterwards I will be able to find jobs only in the US ?
Thank you for any reply.
US or UK

Hi,of course it is a problem to compete with europian colleques but i think everything depends on your network and ability to work no worse than european lawyers do plus a little portion of luck thats all.

In Germany, most big law firms even prefer lawyers holding an LLM from a US law schools. An LLM from NYU, Columbia, Cornell etc.... looks at least as good in your CV as an LLM from a top UK university such as LSE, King's College or UCL. Oxford and Cambridge are of course a league of their own (together with Harvard, Yale..).

To speak also for Germany (although from my point of view this is true for Europe in general): The preference is certainly towards US. But I spoke with several recruiters of big law firms (Clifford, Linklaters etc.). They all told me in the end they would not care about the law school, as long as it is anglo-american. Certainly, HLS and NYU are pretty on your c.v., but what really counts are your language competences and a basic knowledge of the different legal system. Both aims can be pursued at University of Arizona as well. If you have been in the UK, it will not cost you a thing on the job market. Oxbridge, LSE, Edinburgh, King's College... - great schools and not that expensive. In my opinion, you should decide following your interests: LL.M. mainly for language purposes and insight in common law: UK; LL.M. because of special research interest (PhD): US.
