US Job and Columbia

koala

Salut les copains

To cut it short I am dual qualified France UK with 3 years of experience in each country with focus on commercial contracts and IP/IT.

I am currently considering an application to CLS' LLM.

I know that job prospects for foreigners with LLMs are not top (especially at the moment) but I think that a LLM from a top US law school can only improve my chances though...

I am filling my application and I need guidance.

I now have to choose the 'business' courses which are the most likely to open the doors NY job market after the LLM (assuming that I pass the NY Bar).

I hesitate between international law/alternative dispute resolution, IP and Corporate.

1. I love IP but I know that it is extremely difficult for foreigners to find job in the US in this discipline. Am I wrong?

2. Does international law make sense or is the market already flooded by foreign LLM students specialised in international law / arbitration? In your experience are there any job in NY for this?

3. Columbia is the big powerhouse for Corporation law. Do foreign students have a chance here however when competing with purely US trained attorneys?

4. Which courses should I take at Columbia in the above subjects...I know that Pr Coffee and Pr Ginsburgh are top Professors. Which other courses are the top choice?

5. Any other tip?

Merci in advance for your insight and for sharing your science.

if you have a degree from UK your chances should not be so bad. That means you're also a common law lawyer. But always keep in mind that you will compete with native speaker- JD's... Though every year some graduating LL.M.'s stay in the US to work in a law firm, mostly as foreign associate to work in certain cross-border deals with your homecountry. You will probably have best chances if you focus on capital markets law and corporate law. Thats my experience. I am currently at CLS and plan the same like you do... good luck.
