UChicago vs. UPenn

tonyzhu

I got admissions from both schools recently. Since both schools are ranked No. 6 according to the latest US law schools ranking and each has its pros (such as academic environment for UoC and the location for UPenn...) and cons (such as the location and weather for UoC), I am yet to make a difficult choice between them. Can anyone shed any light on this, taking into consideration the benefits as may be available in respect of legal study and career planning? Thanks very much.

Hi tonyzhu,
although I will refuse both UChicago and UPenn offers, I think that they are two great schools.
A very good friend of mine who attended UChicago in 2002 and is now working in New York said to me that while UChicago is not longer regarded as a top a law school (as it was three/four years ago), UPenn is the raising star and apparently it will probably overtake UChicago in the rankings.
As I am not a big fan of the rankings I think you should consider all factors before making your choice, for example apparently UChicago is better if you are more academic oriented, while UPenn is very good for corporate/business law as you will be able to benefit from Wharton courses.

Good luck with your choice
Kind regards
M.

Dear mikifromitaly,

No offense, i dont agree with your friend saying that u chi is no longer regarded as top law school. This sounds quite outrageous and extremely erratic to me who now live in the US. I'm not here to describe each school as "good" or "bad" or "top" or whatever. In the US, i would say U Chi and of course all other schools in top 20 ranking are still considered prestigious and very decent.

Anyway, I do agree with your comment on distinctive character of these two schools. In deciding which school you should attend, such objectively concrete factors should be taken into account, not the subjective and irrational remark of some individuals.
