Rejection from U of Chicago

Jasonllm

Dear XXX,

Your application for our 2009-2010 LL.M. Program has been reviewed by our Graduate Studies Committee and I regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you admission.

Although there is no way to lessen the disappointment which you may feel, we would like to point out that our admission decisions are difficult in most cases every year because of the fine records and achievements characteristic of our applicants. On balance, there is probably little that distinguishes those candidates who are accepted and those who are not. Since we have only about 50 students each year in the LL.M. Program, most of the 700 well-qualified applicants are not offered admission. Our decision on your application does not mean that we thought you were unqualified for Chicago but rather that we believed other candidates were more suitable for our particular program.

You may find it helpful to review the attached list of questions raised by applicants who have not been offered admission.

We are grateful for the interest you have shown in Chicago. I am sorry that we could not act favorably on your application.

Best Regards,

Richard Badger

BTW, I received this email on Feb.6

Why was my application not accepted? It is hard to identify why a particular candidate is not admitted because different members of the Graduate Studies Committee may have different reasons for their votes on an application. This committee review process means that reviewers may give different weights to the various factors in the same application.

Can I have my application reconsidered? The only reason the Graduate Studies Committee will review an application again is if the candidate can provide new significant information, such as a subsequent English language test score.

Although I was not offered admission, can I be considered for a waiting list? At the time the Graduate Studies Committee reviews an application, a decision is made to admit, deny or hold the application for later review. Applications held for later review are placed into what we call our Standby Group. We will consider applications in our Standby Group for places which may become available in the class later in the year. The Standby Group will not include applicants who have already been denied.

Will I get a hard copy letter in the mail? We do not send hard copies of deny letters to applicants, unless candidates specifically request one.

What should I do if I want to reapply for admission next year? We do not have enough storage space to retain all of our applications from one year to the next. As a consequence, candidates who applied to the Law School this year and wish to apply for admission next year should now specifically request that we retain their current application materials. Applicants who do this will not have to submit any documents which were part of this years application. They will, however, have to fill out a new application form (available in September) and submit the application fee. Candidates who reapply may submit any new items they wish such as a new statement or new reference letters.
