NW tax vs. GULC tax

hi,

got accepted to Northwestern's & Georgetown's (international) tax programs. No scholarships as far as i know. yet.

I undertand that GULC is regarded as a better program but still, would appreciate suggestions.

GULC is very well regarded for tax. Moreover, Washington DC is a great city. I would go there.

@Alon123 Congrats on getting into two great tax programs. In addition to consider the reputation of each school, I think it would be helpful to also consider where you want to practice. If you want to practice on the east coast, I think Georgetown would be the better choice. However, if you are looking to practice in the Midwest or West Coast, Northwestern may be the better option. Best of luck to you. I recently wrote an article called "4 Things to Consider in Selecting an LLM Tax Program" if you are interested in reading more. http://www.taxdocket.com/?p=388

@josh129 thanks for the reply. i do prefer practicing in the east coast. could you comment on the reputation of the 2 schools? i somehow had the feeling the GULC is more government oriented while NW is more prictae sector and that NW has a better reputation than is suggested by its ranking. is that so?

No problem @Alon123. In my opinion, the reputation of a particular school depends on many factors. For example, if you were to base your decision on what the U.S. News Reports Rankings say, Georgetown would be the choice. It is ranked second behind NYU. However, if you were interested in working in Chicago, I think NW would have a better reputation among Chicago lawyers and thus it would be easier to get a job in Chicago going to NW. There is no question that Georgetown is more government oriented as it is located in D.C. You will find that many of the G-Town professors are adjuncts who practice in the D.C. area (some in public service). I have heard a lot of great things about NW including that it may very well move up in the rankings in the next few years. However, I still believe that if you plan on practicing on the East Coast, Georgetown may be the way to go. Both are great schools and at the end of the day you have to decide where you will be the happiest. Best of luck.
