Music Law

J. Ryan

Hey, first post here.

So I am looking for some opinions as to LLMs in music or entertainment law. I have searched the old threads, but they weren't very helpful.

Obviously, it make sense to get something of this nature either in the NYC or LA region.

I'm not seeking to get into the top program - because I don't think I could - but merely a very good program would suffice.

I'm a rising 3L right now, born and bred KY, and plan on clerking and prosecuting a couple years before applying.

Thanks.

Hi J:

Southwestern Law School offers an LLM in Entertainment Law, which I'm sure you could fine tune towards music law.

Also, some of the law faculties under the University of London (UK) offer courses in music law and more generally entertainment law, copyright law etc.

Thanks! Yes, I know of it. I have read some negative comments on the school as a whole (at least with respect to not being nationally known), but until I hear something more concrete I am led to think it a real niche program in entertainment. I mean, they are in L.A. and tout that specialty as such. They have some indispensable resources on hand, despite reputation.

Anyone with some experience at Southwestern would be a great help!!!

I too would like to know more about that Southwestern Law School Entertainment Law program.

My initial reaction is like the original posters ... the school is not well known for its general J.D. program (and I am very familar with law school reputations in general) ... however, looking over their information and claims it appears (as that poster stated) that for the Entertainment Speciality they might have carved out a specialty area with it that might be an outstanding nitch program.

ANYONE WITH MORE INFO on SW Law School's program .. of other MUSIC/entertainment realted JD or LL.M. programs please share with us. THANKS.

Southwestern Law School is the perfect option for someone seeking specialization in Entertainment Law, with a specific interest in Music. I am currently a 3L at Southwestern with a focus in Entertainment and I could not imagine getting a better education and better exposure to Entertainment at any other school. Though Southwestern does not have the worldwide name recognition of schools like USC, UCLA and Columbia, Southwestern prides itself on its Entertainment courses, faculty and its relationship with the Los Angeles community.

More than that, I truly enjoying attending Southwestern and I look forward to my classes each week. A quick look at the courses offered at Southwestern shows why Southwestern is a great option for anyone interested in entertainment. Unlike some of the other schools mentioned above, Southwestern does more than provide a mere overview of the field. Beyond the basics like Copyright and Trademark Law, students can take electives specifically geared to their desired niche area. I'm interested in the Film side, but for those of you seeking knowledge in Music Law, there are several electives offered which are perfect. I have many classmates seeking to enter the Music Industry and they have all loved their Music Law electives (ie. Music Publishing, Music Industry Contracts). Further, partly because Southwestern is a smaller school, I have not only had the opportunity to take great courses but to form close bonds with my professors and fellow students.

I highly recommend checking out Southwesterns program if you are curious about any facet of Entertainment Law!
