LSAC

This year NYU strongly recommends to use LSAC service in order to apply for LLM? Does anybody know if it's possible to send all docs straight to the University?

Of course, it is possible to do so. Personally, I would even recommend not to use LSAC as it costs a lot of money and often produces strange evaluations. For example, they have been assessing a grade among top 5% as "above average".

Bye and good luck

When I applied for the LLM program I was told it was a 'must' to take the TOEFL. I told them( the admission folks) that I didn't see the relevance of TOEFL especially since all my legal education had been conducted in English Language. I maintained this position and was eventually given a waiver. Later on, I found out that everyone else in my LLM class had to take the TOEFL including my best friend from Pakistan who also had all her education in English!!!!

What can you take away from this? Paying LSAC $185 (US) is simply a rip-off. Unless push turns to shove, simply claim 'ignorance' and go ahead and make arrangements to have all your remaining material(s) sent in. Let NYU continue to 'strongly prefer' as much as they want!

Best of Luck....

I think the possibility of some confusion may have arisen here. The LSAC does a number of things relating to NYU. One of them is the transcript service (general service for a number of universities) which I think is the relevant to the advice bardiva's posted above. I'm not going to use the LSAC to transmit my transcripts...However, if you're applying for a graduate degree (LLM/SJD) at NYU, the only way you can do it is online and this portal is managed by LSAC as well, which you DO have to register for in order to complete the application. The fee for that is NYU's application charge i.e. $75. I'm not sure, but I think THAT registration (the latter) is inescapable...but not to be feared, anyways.
I'm having problems even using LSAC site to fill the application form, though. It doesn't seem to load...just gives me a blank brownish page. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks.

Thank you, guys, for your posts!
But "srongly recommends" doesn't mean the MUST! Maybe there is still the way out!?!
I really do not want to register with this organisation!

Hyugo, are you going to apply to NYU too? Have you called the University to get to know wether it is possible or not to apply without LSAC or maybe you sent them mails?
Are you 100% sure that it is the only way?

bardiva, HI!
Are you sure that submitting the application form without LSAC registration number won't harm me? Maybe it's better to speak before to somebody from the admission office?

I was having trouble using NYU's online application form too because the page wouldn't load properly so I had to call LSAC's technical support number. If you're having problems, call them - they sorted it out very quickly. What I had to do was go to Tools (in Internet Explorer), Internet Options, Security, Trusted Sites, then add the lsac site as a trusted site.

The least you can do is to give it a try. Try calling NYU without identifying who you are, & if you're using your home phone, make it a blocked call (*67). And try making more statements than questions.

I personally have issues with the language of 'strongly prefers'. I mean I 'strongly prefer' Nutra-Sweet but does that mean I wouldn't settle for Splenda? And why aren't the same rules applied to those whose 1st degree in Law are from Law Schools in the U.S. or Puerto Rico?

So long as your transcripts are in English and you already indicated the University where you want your TOEFL scores to be sent, I don't see the relevance of LSAC in this regard. I'd love to hear what others have to say.

Holmes...if you read the instructions on the applications page you'll see that the only way you can apply to NYU for an LLM is...online. Have you tried doing this? When u do, u'll discover that the site is run by LSAC. How else do you intend to fill & submit that form without registering, i.e. username, password, application fee ($75)? Pls note, I DIDN'T say you should register with LSAC for the TRANSCRIPT SERVICE. I won't. That's where NYU 'strongly recommends' use. Deviant that I am, that's a recommendation that I choose to refrain from accepting..hehe! I try not to call a school unless I'm expecting an answer in my favour...sometimes, ignorance is bliss and is often a sufficient defence.

I don't see why your application would be prejudiced if you don't take TOEFL. It should be the contrary. I just pulled this off the TOEFL site:

Who Should Take the TOEFL Test?

Many institutions report that they frequently do not require TOEFL test scores of certain kinds of international applicants........
.......These include.........nonnative speakers who have successfully pursued academic work at schools where English was the language of instruction in an English-speaking country for a specified period, generally two years........Students should contact their prospective institutions directly concerning their specific admission requirements........

See!!!! all they even require is two years. Unbelievable stuff!!

Hi all.
I am currently doing my LLM and just happened to read your posts. Here some words from someone who applied to NYU last year and was admitted:
1° I did not apply online to the NYU LLM, I used the paper application
2° I had to do the TOEFL since my legal education was not in English
3° I registered with LSAC because at that time NYU was REQUIRING that applicants use their Credential Assembly Service
4° When NYU changed its policy to STRONGLY RECOMMENDED, I was relieved and didn't indicate the LSAC number on my application
5° I was admitted to the LLM

Now a few words to LSAC Credential Assembly Service: if you have not registered yet, then DO NOT DO SO! For the reason I mentioned above I registered with them, but when I saw their evaluation I ended up not using it for any of my applications (except the first application, but at that time I had not yet seen the evaluation they had prepared). I was admitted to all the Universities I applied to (including for example Columbia, UChicago, NYU, UPenn, Cornell...) except the one where I used LSAC Credential Assembly Service.

Good luck with your applications,

DocJ
