LLM at CLS in 2009/2010

koala

Hi all, I have a bunch of questions regarding a LLM at CLS in NY next year.

1. In terms of budget, how much should I expect to pay for the books? Do you have any tips to lower this cost?

2. Regarding bar exams I am interested in NY and California. Is it possible to prepare these two exams together despite the fact that each state bar exam focusses on its own laws. Would you have any advice to help me take/bundle these two exams together in July 2010?...(i.e. make it possible and reduce the cost as far as possible).

3. I live in couple with my American GF. If we cannot find an apartment with CLS, do you know which options would be best regarding private housing in terms of location and budget? Is it possible to find a one bedroom flat in NY at the moment. If so what would be the expected cost ?

Thanks so much in advance for your ideas/response.

Nobody has any idea about this?...or everybody is too obsessed with rankings at the moment?

I don't think it's possible to do the NY and California exams together, although it's a very interesting concept that I've never considered before. JD's do tend to do the NJ, NY together and sometimes the Massachusetts one as well. Why would you want to do that? It is something to consider, but I think practically impossible to do together in a short time.

Just because I work in IP/Entertainment and the two top jurisdictions for this are NY and CA...and I heard of CLS students taking the CA Bar exam. Maybe I misunderstood but I assumed that they also took the NY one.
Is there a lot of study in common for these two bar exams?

3. ... ?

HI Koala,

1. No idea, buy used books at a book store or amazon. Columbia has a nice book store on Broadway (they sell some used books returned by the students as well, but sometimes those are elder editions).
Copying could be a solution for small articles (copy machines used tobe really good at Columbia, but you have to pay for each copied page and not more than certain amount of pages in order not to violate the copyright law). You can buy used books from other students.
If you need a book only for a week or so you can buy it, keep it in a good condition and then return :) I don't think it's really helpful though...
+ libraries always have a copy of the required book, but you have to be lucky to get a hold of it during the exam prep week).

2. No idea, there is a board somewhere try to ask there.

3. Check www.craiglist.com, www.apartments.com or www.rent.net. I think cost would be from ... per month for 1 bdr., depends on location and condition (please see correct price below).

P.S. see http://www.llm-guide.com/board/68424

1. really depends on the classes you take - Law School have estimates on their website

2. impossible. ny are 2 days, CA are 3 - (2 of which the same day as NY). CA you can only take in CA. NY in NY. So impossible do it on the same time. Also, 1 day of exam is state specific so materials are different. If I were you, I would take first NY which is easier and CA on the following semester. make sure to get good MBE score 'cause then I heard you can transfer to CA.

3. one bed, in manhattan, costs around $2,000
