Hi!

I've been reading a lot about people having a really hard time getting a job in the US after getting a LLM.
Are there people from civil law countries who actually got a job in a law firm without a JD after taking the NY bar exam or is it really impossible?

Also, has anyone heard about law schools who would allow foreign law school graduates to get a JD in one year?

Thanks!

I am from a civil law country and I got 4 different job offers to stay in the US permanently. I am currently working in the US. Honestly, if you are from Yale, Stanford or Harvard, it is not so difficult to find a job, but a small effort is necessary (the level of effort most of the times is directly related to the country you are from or how the economy of your country is going). If you are from Columbia, NYU, Chicago or Penn it is difficult, but not impossible. Other top 20 schools are improbable, although not impossible. Outside the top 20, just if you have really good connections to avoid the impossible.
There is no such thing as JD in 1 year. There is a JD in 2 years at Northwestern Chicago which is considered really good. Other schools are offering a 2 year JD as well, but not one of the top 10 schools.

to add on what "gloss" said, google "international law firm" and search for the bios of attorneys at international law firms. some are from Peru, Argentina, Chile, etc. This is possible, although the level of effort required to obtain one of this jobs is probably very high (i.e. top school, good academic record, etc).
