plus......anyone looking forward to workin post LL.M....... i have heard from a friend who is studying there currently...that it gets damn competitive... and difficult and depends on ones networking...
well...dnt want to make u guys feel what you have missed out on...... Indian LL.M. grads frm HLS have got paid as high as 160K .....
beat that
wow! Where did those guys go to work? That's impressive! I thought the best we could hope for would be summer internships...which give $2400 PER WEEK(!) at the top firms...then back home.

Hi fellow Indians,
Greetings...
I am a LLB student from India. Want to pursue my LLM. I have a few very pressing questions
1) From where did you people manage loans? Banks that give edu loans are asking for lot of guarantees and I do not have enough colateral to give such huge guarantees. How did you guys manage loans?
2) Also, what is the scene after LLM as far as jobs are concerned? There is definitive data for other professions like MBAs, engineers etc. but seems to be no data for LLMs. Have any of you found any sites? All I hear is hearsay..so and so got huge salaries etc. but when i have actually pursued to get their contacts and contacted them, some of them told me no yaar, still looking.. It would be very helpful to get a few of them reply on this site so we see some light... I am sure they were in the same boat 2 years back as we are in today..
Nikhil, can you please let us know where these guys work and if possible get them to respond on this site.. I am sure it will be great help to all of us..
Greetings...

hi intlaw,
have u looked at the scholarships available for indians? for example the Fulbright in India offers 4........... 60,000 USD plus scholarships for indians. (1 in ipr, 1 in adr and 2 in clinical dispute resolution)
u can also look at local charitable education foundations like the TATA EDUCATION FUND which disburses funds for higher education in the us.
u can also chose the colleges u apply to ....keeping the scholarships and fin aid in mind. For eg....NYU offers several Hauser Global Scholarships and Grotius awards ..........Columbia offers the Appel and a HR scholarship. i'm sure there are many more out there....just do ur research
if your just look at getting an international llm.......Europe/UK also offers several scholarships in addition to the Rhodes Scholarship u also have.....
a.) Chevening and b.) the Erasmus Mundus
As you are probably aware of by now........employment post LLM (without a JD)..........is a 50-50 shot. those odds get significantly reduced depending on the type of school u've attended, the grades u've scored and whether or not u've passed the bar.
the bare minimum u will spend in the US for ur 1 year llm will average between 50-60K USD. ideally you should atleast get 1/3rd waived in some for of tuition waiver and/or schoalrship another 1/3rd would be from your savings (self financed) and only ur last 1/3rd should be in the form of loans. my suggestion would be for u to do alot of research on the scholarships available for indian students before u even move on to loans. its a myth in india that there are no scholarships for law students. best of luck!

Thanks djvakil. lot of useful info on scholarship front. I will start gathering info on some of these right away..i had talked to usefi about the fulbright and the response was positive..
Your info on job is encouraging.. 50-50 is a good number. what is the source of this info? i have been getting such different numbers from so many ppl.. but nothing definitive yet... the reason i am so anxious abt this is $40-50K is not kind of sum i can afford if i do not get a job in us. and you know the salaries in india for llms...i am worried to death that i may not be able to repay my loan installments..hence so much paranoia about the source of post llm jobs..
BTW: there was a Indian lady on this site, her name was Nandita.. she was from one of the top schools and was looking for job for a long time.. I was in touch with her via e mail but then i lost touch..i dont know if it was bcos she got a job or had to return to india? do u know her? Or do u know anybody else from India who has done LLM and is currently working in US? I would like to get in touch with at least one person.. any help would be appreciated..

re intlaw
i share and understand your anxiety. but i have been told by some sources (and equally denied by some other sources!) that a job possibility after NYU is strong. so that 50-50 statistic holds true. i guess your grades/performance at NYU matters and also that whether u crack the NY bar exam. i have also been told that american firms may be eager to have someone familiar with the Indian commercial/regulatory environment to be on board, especially because india does not allow foreign law firms and indian market is often serviced out of london or singapore's "India desks" (when the work is not outsourced to an indian firm).
i have gotten thru the int'l tax course and i am trying for the scholarships offered there exclusively for the pursuit of the course. even i am trying to get my finances in place and have to hear from them about the schol decisions. find out if your course has some other scholarships offered.
PM me ur email ID. we could perhaps share some other info about NYU! best of luck

Thanks for the info rendezvous. i am glad somone is in the same boat as me as far as finances are concerned. from what i understand, India is opening up the law business. law counsil is opposing the move (as usual) but time will tell what the outsome is.
As far as my plans - I happen to have Indian LLB and US citizenship and want to work in US for a few years. US law education is a bit expensive for me. Canadian education seemed a bit less expensive. So I have applied for Canada residency.
So my options are 2
1) Try to pass NY bar as some threads suggest I can appear and then look for Job
2) Or if I am sure about placements, do LLM.
Currently I think pursuing NY abr option seems more attractive.
All the best to you. Congratulation on NYU admission.

Guys,
Great to see so many Indians active on this site. Let me introduce myself. Rakesh Mehra from Bangalore. LLB from NLS. Working in a medium(by Indian stds) law firm dealing with everything. Have good grades and 4 years experience. Interested in doing LLM from top 3. Then may be internship and / or work. Then return to India to start on my own. Thats the plan.
How about you guys? Anyone from NLS? Anyone planning to appl to HLS next year? Lets share info.
Rendezvous, u seem to be ahead of all of us, already at NYU. Share some tips with us abt appln, reco, sop etc. Good luck with schols.
Intlaw, u worry too much about money. I know its tough but you will find some way. And BTW, worst comes to worst, with your citizenship, you can do some other job in US while looking for a legal job. Stop worrying yaar...
Anyone here for IPR?

I found some info about NYBar and Cali Bar and Indian LLB degree. For what it is worth, I am pasting it here as this is thread for students from India. Not that ppl with LLM would need it, but someone else visiting might benefit...
1) NY Bar : Posted by Coco
"That's a very good question. From what I know (but don't quote me) I think the LLB has to be from the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. It does not seem fair that India is excluded considering the common law background. I would hope someone else in the forum can clarify your question more definitively. I was under the impression that an applicant with an LLB from India must first do an American LLM.
2) California bar: I found this info on www.calbar.org
I thought I would reproduce it here for the benefit of those who need it.....
"To be eligible to take the California Bar Examination, one must have completed at least two years of college before beginning the study of law or must have passed certain specified College Level Equivalency Program examinations before beginning law study and must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association or accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners of The State Bar of California or have completed four years of law study at an unaccredited or correspondence law school registered with the Committee or studied law in a law office or judge's chambers in accordance with the Rules Regulating Admission to Practice Law in California."
3) Posted by Student02
"Its significant to note the following aspects
a) Recently the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test has been introduced in India . Now Indian laywyers can appear for the test to get the 'Solicitor England and Wales' qualification.
b) I think the primary reason for Indians not being able to appear for the NY Bar exam coupled with coaching programs like BARBRI is due the closed approach the the Indian legal system has towards foreign firms.
c)The situation should change in the near future once International firms make a foray into India and set up offices. We still do not have any large law firm to boast about except perhaps the two or three standard Indian'large' law firms. NY Bar Exams without an LLM requirement can only become a reality once firms like Clifford Chance, Shearman and Sterling or Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer enter the Indian market. "
Hope it helps someone...cheers!!!

2) I wish I could stop worrying about the funds but for someone like me, 50K is a huge amount.
Thanks for your concern though. I hope some of these scholarship info provided by djvakil help. Good luck to you with your HLS appl.

Hi NLS ppl,
Passed in 1999. Was always in top 3 in my class. Tried to generate business on my own first 2 years. Did not manage much business. Did IPR from NLS (DistEdu). Working in a law firm since 2002. Want to do LLM from HLS. Any more queries?
Which batches are you ppl from? Currently working or studying? Anyone wants to do LLM from HLS?

hi rakesh. i dont know why u want to appear to be from nls. i am from the batch of 2001 (B.A., LL.B (Hons.)), i have also done my LLM from NLS (2002 - 2004) and I have been teaching at NLS since 2002. I know people from the 1999 batch very well and those in the top 3 and u are definitely not one of them. Like i said earlier, there is no reason why u need to misrepresent on this board. Get a life!!

ms,
And why would anyone claim to be from NLS (of all the places) when one is not?
I am just going about my business of finding info about applying to HLS next year (and not going about checking xyz's credentials etc.) Who would have time to do that? If u say u r xyz from pqr, as u said in ur post, I did not even finish reading it fully, let alone verifying, bcos doesnt serve any purpose for me..my goal is not to verify xyz's credentials. Goal is to obtain necessary info.
But if any of you have so much time on hand I would suggest doing something better and more creative with your time than verifying irrelevent facts. If you still want to verify, pls check with Dr. Vijaykumar.

Rendezvous,
I got ur PM. Thanks. Will send u an e mail.
Rakesh56, ms, others,
Please guys and girls. This board (and this thread too) is a wonderful place. It has so many interesting people like urselves from all over the world. It has given me so much info. It allows us to exchange info in friendly way. And while exchanging info, if we can exchange goodwill, it would be wonderful. Wouldn't it? It would be great if we do not get into personal issues. Just my opinion for what it counts....
I do have a specific question... does anyone know for sure, any Indian who has given bar exam (NY, CA or any other) with just Indian LLB degree? thanks.
