Planning to apply for the 2007 intake - how do you know if you are a chance for admission and scholarships? (Columbia, NYU, Chicago etc)

Can you ask the prospective school or ask your current professor? Is anyone here familiar with the requirements of the ivy schools? For an Australian student?
