Hi guys,
I am Italian and I want to work in Europe.
I got admission with full scholarship at NYU and admission with no financial aid from HLS. I also got a 30K Fulbright scholarship to use either for NYU or for HLS.
Do you think it is worth to spend 40K more to go to Harvard?
Harvard vs NYU

Harvard admissions decisions for 2007-2008? How come??

Has HLS declared its results? It seems that they were going to come out on 21st of March...
Posted Mar 12, 2007 20:39
Wow, this is perfecto
Posted Mar 12, 2007 20:40
..because NYU gave me 48 hours to accept. So I called HLS and explained the sitaution..and they gave an answer

Lucky you about HLS. Congrats!
48 hours? What do they think this is for us - some kind of shoe shopping tour?

Congratulations, Frada!
As a fellow Italian, I can tell you that if you want to work in corporate, big law firms and the like there is nothing to think about: Harvard opens nearly every law firm door here. Plus, you've got a Fullbright. If you are not extremely poor you should no doubt accept Harvard.

In my humble opinion, you should definitely go to Harvard. No doubt.
Even if you're not wealthy, you are from Italy, the Euro is very high now and its very easy to make a loan (sometimes without interest) for a Harvard student.
And if you work for an American law firm following the completion of your LLM, either in the US or in Italy, you will be able to repay your loan in less than one year!

harvard clearly rules
money you can make all your life
a Harvard degree is unique
are you sure you can have the fulbright even if you get something from NYU?

If I have 30K in hand, i will definitely go to HLS.
I don't think you will spend 40K more for one yr at Harvard.
Congrats on your great success!

All thing being equal financially then I would definitely go to Harvard since it has a better reputation.
But with full funding from NYU (I presume the Hauser or equivalent) and a Fulbright then you have more than enough so-called prestige. And to come out of an LLM with no debt is fantastic.
Remember that with a Fulbright it is very hard to work in the US afterwards since most firms won't take you for just a year unless you can arrange it so that you can transfer to one of their European offices afterwards.

As always, I strongly disagree with flygirl (who studied at Columbia and seems to believe that there is nothing in the US outside New York).
In my view, NYU v. Harvard is not a relevant question, even if you have to pay an additional 30k to go to Harvard.
Many people tend to think that NYU is a supermarket and its difficult not to agree with them.
Do you want to spend the rest of your life saying; I was admitted to Harvard but I went to NYU to save 30K?

You'll be disappointed to know that that is not a strong disagreement. I agree that NYU is a supermarket. Although Harvard has a better reputation I don't think the difference in reputation and experience is worth $30k.
I do agree that you may find yourself constantly having to say "But I did get into Harvard...blah blah blah" but it depends how much you care what other people think. For what it is worth, I got into Harvard with full funding on the Frank Knox but decided to go to Columbia for various reasons. People outside of the US always presume I didn't get into Harvard which, if you are the sort of person who cares about how you are perceived, can get annoying. Sometimes it bugs me but usually I don't care too much so just smile even when people said things like "Have fun on your trip to South America" at my leaving party (they thought I was going to Colombia and had never heard of Columbia - heh heh). : )

btw, I am not sure why I keep getting SH*T about promoting New York. I actually would go to Harvard over NYU but for the funding issue. And on my other posts I actually recommend Oxford's BCL over any of the US LLMs. I have also been quite frank about my time at Columbia in terms of the complete lack of faculty willing to supervise LLM students and other weaknesses. Indeed, I am going to either Cambridge or Oxford for my doctorate.
I really wish ppl would avoid making personal insults and assumptions about other people who are posting.
Thanks.

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeez, YLS!! Give her a break! I find Fg's comments always really helpful and anyone would think you have issues with not being in NYC by the way you keep losing it at her.
I am off to Cornell so can only dream of these schools - congradulations on the choice FRada!!!!
