Are you supposed to be notified with your admission letter? If so, I wasn't selected.
Posted Mar 20, 2007 19:27
No, I don't think so. The website says decisions are sent out after admissions notification & that they anticipate selecting all of the Fellows by April 1, 2007.

Okay, well I guess then there's still a small chance for me, although I wouldn't bet on it.
Are you for certain headed to Georgetown?

Most likely not. I've been accepted to NYU, so my current plan is that I would only chose Georgetown if there was some kind of scholarship involved. So we'll see . . . =)
Posted Mar 20, 2007 19:56
Oh I see. I'm still waiting on NYU. If you don't mind, what kind of credentials do you have? Also, did you apply to Florida? I did, and haven't yet recieved any word, but have decided that even if I get in there, I'll go to Georgetown (unless of course NYU offers me a spot.)

Top 2% at law school ranked in the 50s. Law Reivew & 2 other journals w/ editing experience on each of the 3. Booked 3 out of 4 tax courses I have taken in law school & received an A+ also in the fourth. No previous tax law experience. I did apply to Florida in early October & received my acceptance letter sometime around Thanksgiving. But I'd have to agree with you on Georgetown over UF. NYU or not, you can't go wrong with Georgetown - I've heard great things about their program.

Wow. That's really impressive. I'm in the 20-25% range at Texas Tech, a third tier law school. I am a member of the Law Review as well, and have done decently well in my tax courses-A,A, B+, and B. I am also the founder and president of the Tax Law Society here. So I'm thinking NYU might be a reach for me, but still possible. We'll see.
As far as UF vs. Georgetown-it's just that in researching several large firms in Texas (where I am from and want to return to after the LLM program), their tax groups are filled with NYU and Georgetown LLM alum. I have found very few from Florida's program. So it seems to me that at least in the eyes of the big firms in Texas (if not in the eyes of U.S. News & World Report), NYU and Georgetown are still the Top 2 programs.

You've got some impressive creds. as well. I get the feeling that UF is really more of a regional program (highly Florida specific) whereas both NYU & Georgetown offer more of a national appeal. I think their #2 ranking no doubt is influenced by the economic value of the program especially when compared to NYU & Georgetown - UFL is a steal.

Thanks kahd, I appreciate that. By the way, do you know what the cost of attendance estimate is for NYU? I know Georgetown is approx. $59k for the year (living + tuition).
Posted Mar 20, 2007 20:31
For the 2006-2007 academic year it was $61,485. But, this must be assuming living on campus (they estimate apx. 19K for housing which still seems a bit low). Having looked online for apartments in the area (Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Downtown generally), finding even a studio for less than $2,500 a month appears to be quite the challenge. I'm figuring about 80K when all is said & done.

Good. Lord. I already owe over $100k for undegraduate and law school. That doesn't include the Bar Study Loan I'm about to have to take out. $$EIGHTY THOUSAND$$!!!

I know one individual that has already been emailed about his receipt of the GT Tax Scholar Fellowship. Have any others out there received notification?
Posted Apr 02, 2007 23:23
i saw a posting on taxtalent.com where one individual claimed he received an email from gt on 3/30. I personally haven't heard from GT and when I emailed the admissions office earlier this month (march), the lady said they will inform everyone after 4/1

Interesting - I did hear that they usually emailed notification first though, which is what this individual said he received.

At least two people are now reporting on TaxTalent that they received emails last week and were told to expect notification by mail this week of thier Tax Scholar Award.

anybody receive any news about the tax scholar fellowship recently?

I was also accepted to the Graduate Tax Scholar program. It pretty much changed my mind about deferring until next year.
