columbia/nyu admissions

was wondering if anyone on here had by any chance been accepted to either columbia/nyu with a 2.1 (upper second) from an english uni.

I got a first in history and then did the LLB equivalent at oxford in 2 years in which i got a mid 2.1 and ranked only in the top half of my class. i now work in arbitration in london for a vault top 10 new york firm. seems from what people are saying on this forum that if you're not in the top 10% of your class you shouldn't bother with places like columbia and nyu. any thoughs greatly appreciated, thanks!

Mostly true. Although I've never seen anyone with that low of a GPA getting accepted at any of the t14 schools, it's not impossible, at least according to most admissions policies. Grades are important, but not the only criteria. If you have outstanding softs, you could perhaps crack the top five.

A BA 2:1 from Oxford (isn't it an MA by default after a few years?) is nothing to be scoffed at. I know of people who've had similar academic grades make it into NYU and Columbia ... especially coupled with your practical credentials, I'd say go for it :)

Jack85, don't get confused by what Remy said. I think he understood your 2.1 to be a 2.1 GPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPA#United_States).

A 1st and a 2.1 from Oxford are definitely enough to get into CLS or NYU LLM in my opinion.

I just don't get why you would want to add a LLM to your CV if you're already practicing arbitration (which is my dream)! But I would not worry too much, you'll get into a top 14.

Does Oxford give ranking?

Similar situation here. I am attending University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law(also common law jurisdiction), arguably the most prestigious law school in greater China and Asia. And our grading system is extremely tough, For your information, if u get a 3.0 GPA at HKU Law, u probably can get in top 30% or so of the class. And a grade of B- is normally the average or median grade for a course. Based on my current GPA, I probably can end up a 2:1 degree too, namely above 3.0.

My problem is that I am just worried that the NYU Law is not that familiar with the degree of rigor of HK law schools' grading system.

Thus,I just hope Oxford's grading system is similar to HKU. and therefore NYU can deduce the rigor of our school's grading system.

Again, I am wondering if Oxford issues ranking? our school doesn't.
