I am from Austria. I guess I am in the competition with german, switzerland and liechtenstein applicants.
My point is that I think you can get into a top law school with just a normal cv and grades. Of course I could have written that I graduated from the best Austrian university (according to Times ranking). However, there is no point since there are only 5 universities in Austria (which are all same more or less) where you can study law. :-)
Further I dont think that law firms can be ranked as well. At least in Austria there are different law firms with different specializations (there is not even one law firm covering everything). Therefore, I dont think that a law firm specialized in East European law can be compared with a law firm specialized in IP.
Sorry for being off topic. It is only that I dont want other applicants to be discouraged (even if it doesnt work out this time). Honestly, I sincerely believe that you dont need the perfect cv.

Raven, your honesty and humbleness is duly appreciated. Two uncommon virtues in attorneys and law students. You gave hope to us, the average guys...

For those who have been admitted: Did you guys apply for Early Review?
This is the last email I received from them. Am I supposed to receive another email after this?
"Thank you for your interest in Columbia Law School. You have submitted an online application for admission to the Graduate Legal Studies Program. Since the online application process is semi-automated, you are still responsible for sending additional application materials to our office. You must submit:
- Official Transcript(s) of all post-secondary education completed (in sealed envelopes or through LSAC)
- Two Letters of Recommendation (in sealed envelopes)
- Signed Certification Form (available for download from the left-hand menu if you log back in to the online application)
- TOEFL/TWE or TOEFL iBT Scores sent directly from ETS or LSAC, if applicable
- Writing Sample (Associate applicants ONLY)
If you are applying through the Early Review Program, we must receive the above documents by November 1, 2010. If you are applying through the regular admissions cycle, the above documents must be postmarked by December 15, 2010.
Send all supplemental materials to:
Office of Graduate Legal Studies
Columbia Law School
435 West 116th Street
Mail Code 4036
New York, NY 10027
Since you completed your application online, please do not send a printed copy of the online application form with your supplemental materials. Doing so will significantly delay the processing of your application and the timing of your admissions decision.
The Office of Graduate Legal Studies will send you, by email, the following information regarding your application: (1) notification of missing application items, if applicable; and (2) notification that your application is complete. Due to the large volume of applications we receive and the time it takes to process them, there is often a significant delay between when we receive materials and when applicants are notified of their completed file. Please understand that we are therefore unable to confirm the receipt of admissions materials or to answer questions regarding your application status over the telephone, nor can we provide information regarding the receipt of specific documents, as such requests slow the processing time of your application. We aim to notify all applicants as to the receipt of their application materials by late January.
We send all admission decisions by email. Offers of admission are also sent in writing, via courier. Please make sure that you have provided us with a valid email address and a physical address for the courier delivery (we do not deliver admission materials to post office boxes), and that you update that information as necessary by sending an email to the Office of Graduate Legal Studies. Many companies have put up firewalls and email messages get returned to us. Therefore, we recommend that you use a personal email account (such as gmail, hotmail, or yahoo) or speak with your employer's IT department to make sure that messages from Columbia Law School will not be blocked. All decisions are emailed from gls@law.columbia.edu.
If you have other questions, please email us at gls@law.columbia.edu."

Yes, I applied for early review.
And yes, you're supposed to get another email saying that your application is already complete. It took almost 2 weeks for me to get the "application complete" email. good luck!

For those who have been admitted, how long do you have to accept the offer? I'm not at home at the moment so can't look at the admission package, and I can't see the deadline on the admitted students' website. Your response(s) are much appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for the deadline info. Hopefully any applicants who have also applied to Harvard will hear back by then. From last and previous years discussion threads it seems Harvard is the last to get back to applicants

Last year they started in Feb but released decisions until late april...so, don't expect it to be soon! But it's worth it;-)

The early applicants admitted have until March 22 to enroll to Columbia. My sense is that CLS will thus release admission results to the regular applicants once they know how many seats remain avalible, by observing how many early applicants admitted decided to enroll to CLS.
I wish you all nothing but the very best luck in your applications and future decisions!!
