Hey Brightest,
I do not think you should be that hard on yourself writing that it was "stupid of you to ask" we all make mistakes and we are all here to share opinions and informations that may be available to us. Anyways i take no offence.

Jbsinger, thanks for the clarifications. I am also currently working on my applications for Harvard, my recommendation letters is what is outstanding.

Jsinger, since you are in CLS can you inform me on the strenght of CLS is taxation. I want to focus on taxation although i know that a lot prefer NYU for taxation i still opt for CLS.

@Brightest Getting scholarships from CLS ist quite hard - I don't have none. For early review there's no rolling basis. All applicants get notice end of december (as far as I know).

@jboy14 Unfortunately I know only little about Tax @ Columbia. Of course they have some tax classes - maybe check their website http://www.law.columbia.edu/academics/curriculum and look it up. But if you prefer CLS anyway, there's always an opportunity to additionally take NYU classes (which are mostly tax-classes) instead of some CLS classes; they have a cooperation and allow students to take some credits an the other lawschool. That might be a solution for your problem.

Rolling basis...

Having guided someone through CLS/HLS/NYU last year (and succeeded at CLS in early review), I think I can give some comments about the process; however these are just my readings..

I think they classify all applications into three on receipt.. one with a high probability (considering a percentage of their total intake of ~200), then the lower one with low probability, and then those in between. I believe they receive 1200 ~1800 applications every year. But do remember that most of these would have also applied to many other top schools.. say 4 on the average.

Then for the early review, they may invite some 100 or so (a guess), of these, possibly only 50~80 may take it?

They also probably have a rank list of the applicants (of the mid category), possibly region-wise - I am sure you realize that there will be some effort to balance out between regions - and then send out regular offers starting March end..

And this so called rank list could just be a kind of lottery.. there really may not be a significant superiority (or inferiority) of candidates within the group...

And offers do go on till June atleast, though for people from some countries it may be too late..

Good luck to all of you!

Just to add to what is given above..

I have not heard of their sending out regret letters during the early review.. either you get an offer or get moved to regular cycle. (it just means that you are in the second category). Regret letters start coming out only by end April and later.

I know that several people who were moved into the regular cycle at the time of early review really got their offers in April..

Finally, if your grades are decent and your forms are appropriate, you do stand a chance in the lottery.

Good luck once again!

How "huge"? Like 2 meters tall?

From CLS website:

"Please do not submit more than two letters. Part of compiling a strong application for admission is determining which two recommenders will be best able to evaluate your ability to pursue and succeed in graduate legal studies. Even if you indicate that you are submitting more than two letters of recommendation, we will consider your application complete once we have received two letters of recommendation and all other required supporting documentation. Hi Brightest,

Thanks for ur reply. So far I've applied to NYU and CLS. I will also apply to Cornell and maybe to Georgetown. I thought about applying to Harvard but I do not feel confident about their legal statement.

Btw, if anyone currently studies or planning to study at Cornell, please do share some info. I would like to know what are the advantages of studying at Cornell, whar are their best courses/professors and what is so special about Cornell in compare to other law schools? Any info would be greatly appreciated since so far I do not seem to find much specific info abt Cornell.

phhewwww...submitted mine just now, and just in time to be still taken into the early review cycle. Time to lean back and wait for some nice X-Mas gifts ;)

I'm also appying to Harvard, but I'm doing it more for the heck of it, like playing the lottery while I'm at it. I'll just write down about whatever legal issue pops up in my mind and that's that.
As for NYU I'm still trying to figure out how to convey a clear message and still cover acadmic and personal background all within a 500 words limit ...

@Brightest, it's derived from one of my fav. movies, "12 Monkeys". Better to recognize than the 99th "LLM_Corporate_Lawyer_2009-Hahahaha" i guess.

As for the Early Review deadline, and I read over it dozens of times, it clearly states "POSTMARKED by Nov. 3.", which is probably the fairest criteria as well, since the duration of the post delivery may vary drastically from country to country. So I hope that sending it out yesterday did the job.

Where are you guys from anyway and how old?
