Chicago Admission!

L&E-pil

Is there anyone among the admitted applicants, who is going for sure to Chicago? I still wait for decisions from Harvard, Yale and Columbia. If Columbia offers me admission I will most likely turn it down, as I would prefer to go to Chicago (interested in Law and Economics). In addition to this, I don't think Harvard and Yale will offer me admission, so I guess I should already have to prepare for Chicago.
The admissions e-mail said that I'm going to receive the admissions material until March 20 through FedEx and they asked me to respond to the e-mail by sending an address and a phone number for FedEx to deliver. Is this the case with everyone admitted?

I'm from Greece. What about you?
I consider Chicago to be a great law school for an LL.M. Great Professors (unparalleled faculty if you want to study Law and Economics), the quarter system gives you the opportunity to attend as many courses as possible, there is the independent research option where you can pick a subject and study under the supervision of any professor you like, the socratic method (entirely different from the typical european system of lecture delivery) and a small class size. I would really like to go there. I'll just have to wait for Harvard and Yale, before I make my decision.

I have to agree with everything you said.

I would like to hear your thoughts about the location of the school. Everyone here seems to think that attending a school in NYC (i.e. Columbia, NYU) would increase the chances of finding a job.

About your question, i'm from Israel.

I guess this map could be useful: http://maps.uchicago.edu/hydepark.shtml

What about university housing, is it any good? I have read about security issues in that area. Is it ok if you live in university-owned buildings (Graduate Student Housing or New Graduate Residence Hall)? And what about the international house?

Thank you!

Rej (a doctoral student at Chicago) told us that there are shuttle buses which would pick you up anywhere in the Hyde Park area and drive you to the law school and vice versa. In general, I'm sure UChicago has predicted all these stuff. In there website they list many housing opportunities, which shows that they can deal with the issue. I, personally, don't worry about the housing. In daytime, it can't be more dangerous than any other major city in the US and during the night you just take the shuttle bus which runs until 2:00 am.

One additional upside for Chicago's LL.M: As an LL.M. you can do any course you want (you have no restriction at all) and you do not have any mandatory LL.M. course. Apart from that, all courses are with the J.D. and you are evaluated on the same grounds... Thus, it is very competitive (in the good sense of the word) but that allows you to measure yourself against the J.D. I am not sure other LL.M. programs allow you this... here you are just another student and not just a foreigner LL.M.

I applied for Chicago, but haven't received anything yet. Does it mean rejection?

Judging from last year's posts in this site, I'd say it doesn't mean rejection. Chicago announces both admissions and rejections through e-mail. Other universities send admissions by e-mail and rejections by regular mail, so in these cases if you don't receive anything you know that you're rejected. But Chicago doesn't do that. As long as you have not received anything yet, I'd say that you're still in the game. Chicago just released the first bunch of admissions. There is going to be a second one within a reasonable timeframe (presumably by late March). After all, you might get sth today, as they have proven to sent admissions manually (and not automatically or simultaneously). I received the e-mail 4 hours after the first person here claimed to have received it. So, they might still go on with the e-mail process. Good luck!

Good to know. I have not heard anything either

Got accepted to BU but am still waiting on UF, GT, and NU

I have just sent an email refusing the offer of Chicago. It was a tough decision, since all the references I received re. the program are great. I think all other accepted applicants that already know that will not accept the offer should do the same asap. Best of luck to all applicants still waiting for a response!

Hey L&E-pil,

Perhaps you may want to wait for Yale. :) If you got in Chicago, that gives you more than a fair shot at Yale (or Harvard).

I think Yalies consider Chicago their "rival" school. Although I have to agree, Chicago has a very strong Law and Economics bent.

Hey vogelfrei, it's been a long time since I last saw you posting in this board! Welcome back! I'll just have to wait for a month to be sure. I think many people confront the same issue. Harvard, Yale and Stanford (personally, didn't apply there) is what most of us wait for. Especially, Harvard should have received thousands of applications. The great majority of people I've spoken to in this board has applied to Harvard "cause you never know what happens".
Chicago seems to be more academic, so it doesn't surprise me that Yale sees it as a peer law school

Hello guys how are you all? I am asking for your assistance in am important seminar presentation which I have been given due to be presented in two weeks.

I have been asked to pretend to by the manager of a bank providing practical and legal advise on the two scenario below:

Three requests for references (status enquiries) on your good customer, Rita Sullivan, wealthy elderly lady, who owns and runs the local post office. The requests are from a car loan company, a credit card issuer and a hire purchase lender, and the repayments enquired about are all substantial. you know Rita well and see her regularly. She has often said that, at her age, she was glad to be able to pay on-the-dot for everything she needed, and she had no wish to be encumbered by any debt, as she could afford to pay cash for anything she wished to acquire. You are also aware that recently her handbag containing passport, driving licence and bank cards was stolen at and airport on her return from holidays abroad and your branch had arranged to stop her stolen bank cards and issue her new ones.

The other scenario is:

An email from a local businessman who owns a Mini-Market. He says that several relatives in India are wishing to transfer funds from India to the UK, to be kept on deposit pending businesss investments locally. Following the Northern Rock debacle, he asks for confirmation from you of the extent of any government guarantees for depositors placing money in UK banks.

Kind appreciate your time and patience for reading and I look forward to hearing your advises. Thank you. I am desperate for you help.

Hey L&E-pil,

Never realized it but indeed, I have been away from the board for quite a long time. I have been swamped at work and after having submitted my application for You-know-where, I tried to forget it for the moment and concentrate on work--otherwise I might fall into the pitfall of anxiety; which I have fallen into anyway.

Hope you are having a better time waiting. At least you have one of the law schools you applied to reply positively. This is the problem with waiting for just one, I guess. There's a feeling of falling into an abysmal pit and the promise too of floating in the air.

Hope we all float!

- vogelfrei

I can't wait to get back to an academic environment again.

Hey folks, Good to meet you! I just discovered your discussion; I´m Goring and I was also admitted at the end of february! The idea of studying at Chicago is most appealing, I just kept asking myself if I could meet people that were selected for extracurricular activites that show their concern for society and their curiosity for various fields or if the admission was purely based on academic and professional achievements. I was a bit concerned weather students at the UoChicago are equally interested to be in touch with other people; this ongling discussion and the easyness of your comments make me quite sure about it! My only concern about Chicago is that the "life of the mind" does not necessarily take place within vespertine discussions but all alone with books; anyway, do you think students at UoChicago can also be easy and humorous about their subjects or is there a total and unconditioned seriousness? Hope to hear from you and to meet most of you! Going
