Hello,
I am wondering if someone could tell me what my chances are in getting into the NYU LLM Taxation Programm for the year 2010/2011.
I am a German/French national. I finished my law studies in the top 25% and specialized in taxation. At the moment I am doing my two year legal clerkship (which is necessary in Germany to become a lawyer). During that period I will be working in the German office of a white shoe firm and maybe also its head office in NY. I speak four languages fluently, three European and one Asian. I have a little bit of working experience. Toefl is no problem. I am also working on a taxation related Phd though I might not have finished that by the time I apply for the LLM.
I know that top 25% might not be good enough for NYU and I am wondering which criterias matter most.
One more question: Is it of any help to know NYU alumnis?

Zei,
I'm not really qualified to answer your question, I've only just started applying myself. That being said, your credentials look impressive to me. I've only been coming to this site for a few days, but I haven't been able to find any definitive answers on the admissions standards.
I think "most" of the American JDs that are in the top 25% of a good school are all working at big firms. That is anecdotal, based on what my friends and people I know are doing. So, if you cut that group of people out, you probably stack up pretty well with the remaining candidates.
Especially since you've specialized in tax and will have two years of work experience.
I'd be optimistic of your chances, but I'd have some contingency plans in place in case you get rejected.
All that is just my opinion though, and it isn't really based on any facts, so take it with a grain of salt.

Yes, thank you. Those good old contingency plans are not that easy when one is aiming for NYU.
Can anyone else give me input?

After I receive my answers, if I am admitted to any of the universities, I promise to get back to you.
